CLASS: NOT SO BASIC ART 201/ DISNEY ANIMATION TECHNIQUE
South Ballroom, Disneyland Hotel

Entering the large “classroom,? students found the round tables carefully laid out with all the materials needed for a most instructive session.

At the front of the room, Art Professor Craig Hodgkins and Master Inker and Painter Sherry Vandoli were patiently waiting for everyone to settle into place.

When all the students had found their seats, the instructors signed in on the chalk board, and explained that in just one hour, every student would learn how to paint an actual animation cel. And who better to explain this than Sherry Vandoli, a 24 year veteran of Disney’s Ink and Paint department? Vandoli is one of the four remaining practitioners of that art still working at Disney.

The instruction sheets seemed clear enough. Paints (to be shared by teams of two) were on hand. What could be simpler than filling in the colors needed to bring Donald Duck to colorful life?
