In this ‘Toon Talk’ feature, I’ll briefly highlight a recommended film or DVD, outside of the Disney universe, of similar interest to the main subject.

Treasured Toon Treats

Leonard Maltin is not just a fan of Disney animation, as is proven with the DVD Leonard Maltin's Animation Favorites from the National Film Board of Canada (Image Entertainment).

The NFBC has been in existence since 1939, and has continually provided an environment for innovation and experimentation in filmmaking, particularly in animation. Long a presence in the Academy Award animated short category, this disc includes the nominated shorts Pas de Deux (a.k.a. Duo), The Street, The Cat Came Back and six other cartoons.

Coming Soon in Toon Talk:

  • Now available, more from wave 5 of the Walt Disney Treasures series: Legendary Heroes: Elfego Baca and Swamp Fox and The Adventures of Spin and Marty.
  • Following in the footsteps of its predecessor, Toy Story 2 gets a new two-disc Special Edition of its own December 26.
  • Toon in for the Toon Talk Top 10 of 2005.

And Coming Soon from Buena Vista Home Video:

  • The Academy Award-winning Chicago finally gets a special edition with a “Razzle Dazzle Edition?; another Broadway fave, Once Upon a Mattress, fresh off its television debut, stars Carol Burnett and Tracey Ullman; Heath Ledger and Matt Damon co-star in Terry Gilliam’s latest, The Brothers Grimm; and Benjamin Bratt and James Franco lead the war drama The Great Raid, available separately in the theatrical release and an unrated director’s cut (December 20).
