Toon Talk: Peter Pan Platinum Edition DVD

Clements and Musker return to present a seemingly endlessly supply of early story ideas in “The Peter Pan That Almost Was?. The lengthy period of development on this particular project produced such ultimately unused concepts as alternate openings and a larger role for the lovable Nana.  Also revealed is how the famous “I do believe in fairies? bit from the play was ultimately cut from the movie.

The skimpy Art Galleries of the ’02 Pan DVD have been fleshed out here, including sections on David Hall’s wonderful story book-like concept art, character designs for the entire cast, production photos (such as Roy Williams and Ward Kimball goofing around, Wendy voice actor Katherine Beaumont visiting the animators and Peter himself, Bobby Driscoll - in full “Pan? regalia - conversing with Walt on the set) and poster art for various releases both domestic and international. The most extensive and illuminating collection included is devoted to the live action reference footage used by the artists in the making of the film, including shots of Hans Conried himself in full Hook drag.

Toon Talk Rating: B

In this ‘Toon Talk’ feature, I will briefly highlight a recommended film or DVD, outside of the Disney universe, of similar interest to the main subject.

Perfect Pixie Picture

Of all the many cinematic adaptations of J.M. Barrie’s perennial play, the most recent one is the best. Peter Pan (2003, Universal) unjustly came and went pretty much unnoticed a few Christmas’ back. Director P.J. Hogan (previously known for helming Weddings for Muriel and My Best Friend) delivers a magical, lush fantasyland come to vivid life. Jeremy Sumpter makes an enchanting Peter, but, as usual, it is the role of Captain Hook that steals the show, and The Patriot’s Jason Isaacs plays the pompous pirate for all it is worth.

Also starring Rachel Hurd-Wood and Lynn Redgrave; the DVD is available in both widescreen and full screen versions from Universal Home Video.

Coming Soon:

  • Meet the Robinsons in … Meet the Robinsons, Disney’s latest computer animated fantasy comedy (March 30).
  • High School Musical’s Corbin Bleu goes Double Dutch in the Disney Channel hit Jump In!, on Disney DVD April 3.
  • The big green ogre is back again in DreamWorks’ Shrek the Third (May 18).
