Yet Harry is not just the protagonist in a best-selling series of children’s books any more. With this latest film, he has ascended to the rank of full-fledged movie hero, joining such legendary fantasy film icons as Luke Skywalker, Indiana Jones and Frodo Baggins. Let us hope that that Star Trek “curse? is broken in time for the next chapter.

Toon Talk Rating: B+

Out of the Ordinary Students Edition

In this ‘Toon Talk’ feature, I will briefly highlight a recommended film or DVD, outside of the Disney universe, of similar interest to the main subject.

THE HISTORY BOYS
2006 - Fox Searchlight

Richard Griffiths, who plays Harry’s revolting uncle in the Harry Potter movies, plays a very different role in The History Boys. As a well-meaning yet deeply flawed teacher, Griffiths enthusiastically displays a love of learning. He is charged with preparing a misfit group of male students as they prepare for their university entrance exams, and thus life as well.

The movie, directed by Nicholas Hytner, is based on Alan Bennett’s play that took the theater world by storm two years ago, winning every major award during its sold-out London and Broadway engagements. The film stars the entire original cast, including Griffiths’ fellow Potter alum, Frances de la Tour.

DVD available from Fox Home Video. Rated R.

Coming Soon:

  • D’oh! That yellow-skinned dysfunctional family from Springfield finally makes it the big screen with The Simpsons Movie (Fox, July 27).
  • There’s no need to fear, Underdog is here! (Disney, August 3).
