'Disney's Lloyd in Space' TV Series to Join 'Disney's One Saturday Morning' Slate on ABC in 2001

'Disney's Recess' Creators Go Where No Alien Teenager Has Gone Before In New Series from Walt Disney Television Animation

Teen angst goes to the comic edges of the universe in "Disney's Lloyd in Space," a new series from Walt Disney Television Animation and the award-winning creators of "Disney's Recess" to premiere in early 2001 as part of the "Disney's One Saturday Morning" lineup on the ABC Television Network, it was announced today by Jonathan Barzilay, senior vice president and general manager, ABC Children's Programming and Barry Blumberg and David Stainton, executive vice presidents, Walt Disney Television Animation.

"Disney's Lloyd in Space" follows the humorous, day-to-day dilemmas of Lloyd, a space station-bound, alien teenager who must -- as all teens do -- endure the often confusing transition toward adulthood.

"We are thrilled to have 'Lloyd in Space' joining our lineup, and that executive producers Paul Germain and Joe Ansolabehere can continue connecting with kids on ABC," said Barzilay.

"With 'Lloyd in Space,' Paul and Joe have further enhanced their reputation for creating quality animated television for kids that is rich in imagery and resonant with stories that all kids will relate to, whatever planet they're from," Blumberg said.

"In terms of animation, the unique visual look of the series takes Saturday morning cartoons in a new and innovative direction," added Stainton.

Germain and Ansolabehere are the award-winning team that created the acclaimed series, "Disney's Recess." The pair previously teamed on Nickelodeon's "Rugrats," where Germain served as the series' co-creator, developer, head writer, voice director and supervising creative producer while Ansolabehere was the head story editor. The three-time Emmy Award-winning Germain also was associate producer of Fox TV's "The Tracey Ullman Show," where he supervised production of Matt Groening's "Simpsons" cartoons (which originated as two-minute animated spots on that show) and then co-produced several episodes of "The Simpsons" primetime series. Ansolabehere wrote and produced the original pilot for USA Network's animated series, "Duckman" and was co-producer and story editor on Nickelodeon's hit animated series, "Hey, Arnold."

The ensemble voice cast is headed by Emmy Award-nominated actor Courtland Mead (Stephen King's "The Shining," "N.Y.P.D. Blue," "The Young & The Restless") as the series' title character, "Lloyd." Key characters include Lloyd's clique of friends -- the scheming "Eddie" (Justin Shenkarow, "Picket Fences"), the only human kid on the station; enormous "Kurt" (Bill Fagerbakke, "Coach"), a sweet, muscle-bound creature with the intelligence of a moon rock; and verifiable genius "Douglas" (Pam Hayden, "The Simpsons"), who is literally a walking brain. Others include the mentoring "Station" (Brian George, "Seinfeld"), an omnipresent extension of the space station; Lloyd's mother, Captain Nora Nebulon, (April Winchell, "Disney's Recess," "Disney's Pepper Ann"), commander of the space station; his annoying little sister, Francine (Nicolette Little, "Love & Sex"); Mrs. Bolt (Tress MacNeille, "Disney's Recess"), the kids' robotic instruction unit, aka eighth grade teacher; "Horton" (Clancy Brown, "ER," "The Shawshank Redemption"), Eddie's father and the station's human police officer. Diedrich Bader ("The Drew Carey Show") has a recurring role, while Ben Stein ("Win Ben Stein's Money") and John O'Hurley ("Seinfeld") are among the series' guest stars.
