EtchArtist Draws Disneyland Inspired Pictures Using an Etch A Sketch

How good are you at drawing on an Etch A Sketch? I mean really drawing using just those little nobs to make a decent picture? What seems like a simple kids toy can actually be used to make something quite impressive. For one artist, time and patience were all it took for him to master his craft.

Update (1/26/19):

The EtchArtist has been busy since we last wrote about him. He’s recently completed two new drawings as part of his Disneyland Project: “it’s a small world” and Sleeping Beauty Castle. Check out both pictures below:

“it’s a small world:”

  • According to his Reddit post, it took 27 hours to draw the classic attraction.
  • But what’s even more fun, is that he installed LED lights in the Etch A Sketch what adds a really cool effect.

Sleeping Beauty Castle 2019:

  • After originating this drawing in 2008, Davis decided to make it again, this time on a 50th anniversary Etch A Sketch.
  • This project took him over 30 hours to complete but thanks to a time lapse video, you can see the work in just 3 minutes!

Previously:

Back in August, we wrote about artist Ken E. Davis and his awesome collection of Etch A Sketch drawings. At that time he’d just completed his Pirates Treasure Room drawing.

The Etch Artist:

  • Kevin E. Davis knows his way around an Etch A Sketch. The kids’ toy that most of us take for granted? He uses it to make some awesome images.
  • Davis is known on Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter as EtchArtist. He also has his website where he shares with fans how he got started with his unique talent: “When Toy Story came out in 1995, I picked up an Etch A Sketch and drew a picture of Woody. That is when I discovered that I could really develop this skill. In the beginning, I would complete an etch, take a picture of it and then erase it.”
  • Now Davis saves all of his sketches and even does commissioned work for others. One of his current undertakings is what he’s calling the Disneyland Project.
  • Davis hopes to draw a whole collection of Disneyland attractions, enough for a gallery show where he can proudly display his work. So far his Disneyland Project consists of his original Sleeping Beauty Castle picture (from 10 years ago), the 4 Haunted Mansion portraits, and his latest addition, the treasure room from Pirates of the Caribbean.
  • According to his website, the next sketch for the Disneyland Project is “it’s a small world.”

Below is a clip of Davis drawing the treasure room. He’s condensed 37 hours of work into one 2 and a half minute video!
