AWARDS WATCH: Enchanted Edition

Not since Julie Andrews played a certain practically perfect nanny has their been talk of Oscar in connection to a Disney leading lady. But, here we are, over forty years after Mary Poppins, and the buzz in the air (or at least on the internet) is that Amy Adams may just get nominated for an Academy Award as Best Actress for her performance as Giselle in Enchanted.

Her competition not only comes from the expected dramatic contenders (Julie Christie in Away from Her, Marion Cotillard in La Vie en Rose), but also from the realm of comedy (Ellen Page in Juno, Keri Russell in Waitress) and musicals (Nikki Blonsky in Hairspray, Helena Bonham Carter in Sweeney Todd). With the rave reviews shes been receiving, and the film poised to be the (as they say) family hit of the holiday season, shell have a good start. If (or more likely, when) she is nominated for a Golden Globe, her chances will increase. And if she wins that trophy, she should start picking out her dress for the big night.

The other strong award possibilities for Enchanted are in the music categories, specifically for Original Song. As you know, Alan Menken and Stephen Schwartz are no strangers to the Oscars, having won eleven between them. Three of their songs (Happy Working Song, Thats How You Know and So Close, the romantic ballad heard during the ballroom scene) are being submitted for consideration, with Thats How You Know the favorite. This is an unusually crowded year for songs, with Hairspray, Into the Wild and Once offering formidable competition; however, with their past history in the category, they should be able to make the final cut. Hopefully the Academys nominators will keep in mind that Thats How You Know would make a heck of a production number onstage at the Kodak Theater.

The Golden Globe nominations will be announced December 13, followed by their awards on January 13. Then, the Academy Award nominations will be announced January 22, with the Oscar telecast on February 24.

Coming Soon:

  • This years Walt Disney Treasures includes the latest batch of Donald Duck cartoons, rare Oswald the Lucky Rabbit shorts and a look at the Stories, Secrets and Magic of Disneyland (Disney DVDs, December 11).
  • What time is it? Time for High School Musical 2 to hit Disney DVD! (Also available December 11.)
  • Toon in for the Toon Talk Top 10 of 2007.
