Pixar Gives Us A Closer Look At When We First Met Dug in 2009’s “Up”

Pixar Animation Studios has released a video giving a closer look at one of the scenes from their movie, Up, where we meet a character who has grown quite the fan base over the last 12 years.

What’s Happening:

  • Pixar has released a video taking a look at a scene from 2009’s Up, and giving a behind the scenes look at the developmental process behind it.
  • The video features Bob Peterson (Writer, Co-Director, and Voice of Dug & Alpha) and Bryn Imagire (Shading Art Director) discussing what they contributed to the film, all the way from voices to textures.
  • The scene in question is called “Meet Dug,” where the audience first met one of the favorite characters to come from the film, Dug, the dog who can talk.

  • Peterson, who provides the voice of Dug, says the voice came from the way he talks to dogs in real life, and just conveyed that into the voice of Dug.
  • Imagire spent a lot of time discussing the look of Venezuela, showing their research trips and their visits to Tepuis, the tabletop mountains that they feature heavily in the film. She went on to say that since it already felt like they were on another planet while still being on Earth, the artists couldn’t stylize anything too much or the film will look like Mars.
  • Up, originally released in 2009, follows Carl, a 78-year-old balloon salesman, who is about to fulfill a lifelong dream and promise to his late wife, Ellie. By tying thousands of balloons to his house, he flies away to the South American wilderness. But curmudgeonly Carl's worst nightmare comes true when he discovers a little boy named Russell is a stowaway aboard the balloon-powered house, where the adventures also lead them to Dug, a talking dog, and Kevin, an ultra-rare bird.
  • The movie was a box office and critical success, winning the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature as well as a rare-for-animation nomination for Best Picture. Dug became a fan favorite character, and is even getting his own series coming soon to Disney+, Dug Days.
  • The scene can be seen below, and the full presentation of Up can be streamed now on Disney+.
