Earlier today, Friday Nov. 22nd, Disneyland submitted an application to the City of Anaheim for a conceptual development review of a new 350 room Disney Vacation Club tower, according to the OC Register.
What’s Happening:
- Disneyland officials have proposed a new 12-story tower next to the Disneyland Hotel as part of the Disney Vacation Club vacation ownership program.
- While it’s not clear at this time whether it would be considered part of the Disneyland Hotel or a separate resort unto itself, the location and scope of the project sound similar to what Florida park-goers/DVC owners might already be familiar with as Bay Lake Tower at Disney’s Contemporary Resort.
- Disney officials said the proposed new tower is not a hotel and to confuse the two would be misleading, adding more speculation that this would just be a DVC tower added to the existing Disneyland Hotel.
- Officials say the look and theme will complement the existing buildings of the Disneyland Hotel, which opened shortly after Disneyland Park back in 1955. Though built in 1955, Disneyland Hotel has seen significant renovations throughout its 60-plus year history, the most recent being a major overhaul that begin in 2010, ending in 2012 that carried a theme celebrating the history of the hotel and the neighboring Disneyland Park.
- The project area for the new tower is located in a grassy area between South Walnut Street and the Frontier Tower of the Disneyland Hotel, with a laundry facility and adjoining fitness center being the only pre-existing building to be affected based on the proposal.
- Aficionados of the Disneyland Hotel will remember this area as the site of Fantasy Waters, a free fountain show that played to hotel guests, and now known as the Magic Kingdom Lawn, hosting weddings, receptions, and other events.
- The project is also listed as being 280,000 square feet, with approximately 350 rooms. This would drastically increase the Disney Vacation Club presence at the Disneyland Resort, from the current 71 DVC rooms currently allocated at Disney’s Grand Californian Resort and Spa.
- Late last year, an earlier announced fourth Disney resort for the California property was cancelled amid debate over a tax rebate agreement worth $267 Million to the Walt Disney Company. The project was planned for the western edge of Downtown Disney, including the existing monorail station, that closed numerous Downtown Disney offerings, including Rainforest Cafe and the AMC Theater, and was planned to open in 2021. With the new DVC tower at/near the Disneyland Hotel, Disney has said they will not be seeking a tax incentive from the city of Anaheim for the project.
- Disney says the proposed DVC resort would create 550 construction jobs, and 100 timeshare operations jobs if the project is approved. No opening date has been set, and the project is not expected to be completed before 2022.
