Marvel Studios Taps Destin Daniel Cretton to Direct “Shang-Chi”

Marvel has found another new director for one of their slated movies. The studio has tapped Destin Daniel Cretton to direct Shang-Chi, the kung fu-based superhero film, according to Deadline.

  • Cretton fits into Marvel’s reported plans to populate this film with Asian-American talent.
  • Cretton joins writer Dave Callaham, who signed on to write the screenplay for Shang-Chi back in December.
  • Cretton is currently directing a film titled Just Mercy which stars Marvel Cinematic Universe veterans Michael B. Jordan (Black Panther) and Brie Larson (Captain Marvel).
  • Shang-Chi made his comic book debut in 1973 and has been Marvel’s master of kung fu ever since.
  • The character’s story focuses on his relationship with his father, who closed him off from the outside world while he trained in the martial arts, only to release him later to do his bidding.
  • Shang-Chi would eventually learn that his father was not the mane he thought he was.
