Pixar Shares Clip from “The Making of Float” Now Available on Disney+

Pixar Animation Studios has shared a short clip from The Making of Float sharing the story behind the SparkShort, Float and the decision to make the characters Filipino American reflecting the personal nature of the story from director Bobby Rubino.

What’s Happening:

  • Pixar Animation Studios released a short little clip sharing some inspiration behind the Pixar SparkShort, Float, with the film’s director Bobby Rubio.
  • The clip showcases how Director Bobby Rubio was inspired by his own son and his relationship with him, and how his wife suggested he create a story since he’s a storyteller.
  • When friends and colleagues saw that he drew the story featuring characters who were caucasian, they suggested that he make them Filipino American to better reflect the personal nature of his story. Rubio himself agreed, saying “They’re going to be Filipino American and I’m going to tell my story.”
  • The clip is just one moment of The Making of Float, now available to watch on Disney+.

  • In Float, a father discovers that his son is different from other kids in the most unusual way. To keep them both safe from judgement, Dad covers him and keeps him out of sight—but when his son’s ability becomes public, Dad must decide whether to run and hide or to accept his son as he is.
  • Float is part of the SparkShorts program from Pixar Animation Studios, which is designed to discover new storytellers and new storytelling techniques with films unlike anything ever done at Pixar before, which provides an opportunity to unlock the potential of individual artists and their inventive filmmaking approaches on a smaller scale than the studio’s normal fare.
