“Spider-Man: Far From Home” to Wrap Up Phase Three of the MCU

Wait what? Avengers: Endgame isn’t the final entry in Phase Three? That’s right, Marvel Studios’ Kevin Feige noted that it’s actually this summer’s Spider-Man: Far From Home that will finish out the third Phase of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

What’s happening:

  • A recent article in Newsweek, revealed that contrary to what fans have been speculating, Phase Three of the Marvel Cinematic Universe does not end with Avengers: Endgame.
  • Instead of the epic fourth Avengers entry, it’s the July 2019 film Spider-Man: Far From Home that closes out this stage of the MCU.
  • According to Newsweek, when asked about the Spidey flick at a fan event in Shanghai, Kevin Feige, President of Marvel Studios said, “It’s the end of the third phase.” Newsweek notes that Feige also said it was the first time he’d said that publicly.
  • While this news is a bit startling, in some ways it makes sense to wrap up the Phase with something a little more lighthearted.
  • In fact, this isn’t the first time Marvel has made such a move. Phase Two ended with the introduction of Paul Rudd’s Ant-Man following Avengers: Age of Ultron.
  • Ant-Man was then featured in the first film of Phase Three when he fought with Team Cap in Captain America: Civil War.
  • Even though nothing has been confirmed at this point, it wouldn’t be shocking if Marvel (and co producer Sony) had plans to tease new characters and story arcs for Phase Four via Far From Home.

About Spider-Man: Far From Home:

  • After the events of Avengers: Endgame, Peter Parker and his friends go on a trip to Europe where Peter finds himself trying to fight off a new foe, Mysterio, who may not be all that he appears.

  • Tom Holland as Peter Parker

  • Director Jon Watts on Nick Fury in Far From Home: “If Tony is like the supportive cool uncle, Fury's more like the mean new stepdad. Fury doesn't see himself in Peter Parker. Fury sees Peter Parker as an asset that he needs who is too preoccupied with a bunch of high school problems."

Avengers: Endgame opens everywhere this Friday, April 26. Spider-Man: Far From Home swings into theaters July 5.
