“The Handmaid’s Tale” Renewed by Hulu for Sixth and Final Season, Follow-Up Series Also in Development

Ahead of the show’s fifth season premiere, Hulu has officially renewed The Handmaid’s Tale for a sixth and final season.

What’s Happening:

  • In addition to season six of The Handmaid’s Tale, Bruce Miller (creator, showrunner and executive producer) is actively developing The Testaments, a follow-up to the series which picks up years later.  
  • Adapted from the classic novel by Margaret Atwood, The Handmaid’s Tale remains increasingly relevant nearly 40 years after its initial publication.
  • In 2017, Hulu made history as the first streaming service to win a Primetime Emmy Award in the Best Series category when the program took home the award for Outstanding Drama Series. Since then, the series has been the recipient of numerous accolades including a combined 15 Emmy Awards, and the prestigious Peabody Award.

  • The fifth season of The Handmaid’s Tale premieres with two episodes on Wednesday, September 14th on Hulu.
  • In the fifth season, June faces consequences for killing Commander Waterford while struggling to redefine her identity and purpose. The widowed Serena attempts to raise her profile in Toronto as Gilead’s influence creeps into Canada. Commander Lawrence works with Nick and Aunt Lydia as he tries to reform Gilead and rise in power. June, Luke and Moira fight Gilead from a distance as they continue their mission to save and reunite with Hannah.
  • The fifth season stars Elisabeth Moss, Bradley Whitford, Yvonne Strahovski, Max Minghella, O-T Fagbenle, Samira Wiley, Ann Dowd, Madeline Brewer, Amanda Brugel and Sam Jaeger.
  • The Handmaid’s Tale is produced by MGM Television and executive produced by Bruce Miller, Warren Littlefield, Elisabeth Moss, Daniel Wilson, Fran Sears, Eric Tuchman, Yahlin Chang, Rachel Shukert, Sheila Hockin, John Weber, Frank Siracusa, Steve Stark and Kim Todd.
