“The Mandalorian” Original Novel Cancelled by Del Rey as Lucasfilm Expands Series On Disney+

The world of The Mandalorian may be expanding thanks to several spinoffs announced by Lucasfilm at the end of last year, but there’s one element to that growing universe that won’t be going forward. Today the book publisher Del Rey revealed that its project The Mandalorian: An Original Novel by Adam Christopher has been cancelled, after first being scheduled for release last fall and then delayed to fall of 2021.

Del Rey made the announcement in a pair of tweets explaining the decision and insisting that the company plans to work with Christopher on an alternate project.

What’s happening:

  • Book publisher Del Rey has announced that its previously scheduled release of The Mandalorian: An Original Novel has been cancelled, due to the Disney+ series’ upcoming expansion on the small screen.
  • At the end of 2020, three live-action spinoffs of The Mandalorian were announced for Disney+: Star Wars: Ahsoka, Star Wars: Rangers of the New Republic, and Star Wars: The Book of Boba Fett.
  • The Mandalorian: An Original Novel was first revealed by Lucasfilm Publishing in June of last year with an intended release date of fall 2020, and was then delayed a full year to the fall of 2021.
  • Del Rey has also indicated that it will be working with author Adam Christopher on a different book.
  • In a separate tweet, book publisher DK has also confirmed that it will no longer be releasing author Pablo Hidalgo’s The Mandalorian: The Ultimate Visual Guide this year.
  • Whether either of these projects remain in development to be released at a later date remains to be determined.

What they’re saying:

  • Del Rey: “Due to the ever-expanding world of The Mandalorian, we will no longer be publishing THE MANDALORIAN ORIGINAL NOVEL at this time, as the story continues to unfold on screen. We love working with author Adam Christopher and are already working with him on a different book. We’re excited to share details with you in the future.”
  • DK: “Due to the ever-expanding world of The Mandalorian, we will no longer be publishing The Mandalorian Ultimate Visual Guide at this time, as the story continues to unfold on screen.”

The Mandalorian is currently expected to return for a third season sometime in 2022 exclusively on Disney+.
