Disney+ has tweeted two very distinct and unique pieces of art in honor of Juneteenth and celebrating Black stories that are available to watch on the popular streaming service.
What’s Happening:
- In honor of Juneteenth, Disney+ has shared some beautiful art created in a partnership with two powerful Black artists to reflect on and celebrate the humanity of Black lives, through the lens of their Disney-inspired creations.
- The first piece is Princess Tiana, by Nikkolas Smith. Based on 2009’s The Princess and the Frog, the art shows the star of the 49th feature length film from Walt Disney Animation Studios holding a portrait of her parents and inspiration, as well as channeling the art deco style of the performance of the signature song, “Almost There.”
- The second piece of art is by Khia Ancalade and shows off a stylized version of The Proud Family, from the Disney Channel Series, The Proud Family. Originally debuted in 2001, The Proud Family aired through August of 2005 up until the Disney Channel Original Movie, The Proud Family Movie, debuted, which served as a series finale for the show. Even though no new episodes were being produced, the series continued to air on Disney Channel and Disney XD through 2009. The series went on to be nominated and win numerous awards, including the 2004 BET Comedy Award for Outstanding Animated Series.
- These stories will continue on Disney+. Not only are The Princess and the Frog, The Proud Family, and The Proud Family Movie already available to view on the streaming service, but a new series based on the properties are set to premiere on Disney+ in the future. Both The Proud Family: Louder and Prouder and Tiana have been announced and are in the works.
