ABC Cancels “Who Wants to Be a Millionaire” After 17 Years in Syndication

ABC has cancelled the long-running game show Who Wants to Be a Millionaire after 17 years in syndication and 20 years since it premiered on the network, according to Deadline.

  • Who Wants to Be a Millionaire premiered on August 16, 1999 with then-host Regis Philbin.
  • It moved into syndication in 2002, when it began its 17-year run.
  • After Philbin, the show was hosted by Meredith Vieira for 11 seasons, followed by Cedric the Entertainer, Terry Crews and most recently Chris Harrison.
  • The show recently announced that it had given away more than $100 million in total winnings since 2002, a milestone that was celebrated with specialty shows, giveaways and a commemorative show in which favorite past contestants were given another shot at $1 million.
