In a slew of Marvel announcements for Disney+ Day, Disney+ announced that the beloved X-Men: The Animated Series will be returning in the form of a new series titled X-Men ‘97.
- Now that the X-Men: The Animated Series theme is stuck in your head, you can start getting excited about the idea that we are getting a continuation of that beloved series from the 90s.
- Disney+ even tweeted an image of the popular meme featuring Wolverine staring longingly at a framed photo while laying in bed. Only this time, the image is the new logo for X-Men ‘97.
- Marvel also highlighted This Week in Marvel, which saw hosts Lorraine Cink and Ryan Penagos speak to Brad Winderbaum, Head of Streaming, Television, and Animation at Marvel Studios, and Dana Vasquez-Eberhardt, VP of Animation at Marvel Studios about the new series.
- Winderbaum pointed out that this is the first X-Men title produced by Marvel Studios:
- “What an amazing first step to reintroduce audiences to the X-Men with a look at one of the most pinnacle eras of the X-Men comics, which was the ‘90s. That iconic style that has its roots in Chris Claremont, and is celebrated in Jim Lee, and then again in The Animated Series.”’
- Vasquez-Eberhardt explained that the creators of this new series are all fans of the original:
- “As an animated show, the original X-Men was the forerunner to some amazing action series. Everyone that is making X-Men ’97, top-down, is a fan. On this project, instinctually, we knew exactly what this is. To bring this series forward and pick up that baton, and not just keep running at the same pace, but to really elevate. That’s the responsibility.”
- The show will see the familiar team reunite because of an “impactful event” and all-new chapter that will resonate with fans of the original series.
- The series will also see much of the voice cast reprise their roles and pick up some new ones, including:
- Cal Dodd
- Lenore Zann
- George Buza
- Alison Sealy-Smith
- Chris Potter
- Catherine Disher
- Adrian Hough
- Christopher Britton
- The series will also welcome some new voice talent, including:
- Jennifer Hale
- Anniwaa Buachie
- Ray Chase
- Matthew Waterson
- JP Karliak
- Holly Chou
- Jeff Bennett
- AJ LoCascio
- The head writer and executive producer on X-Men ’97 is Beau DeMayo.
- Supervising director is Jake Castorena and supervising producer is Charley Feldman.
- Also consulting on the new series are X-Men: The Animated Series producers and showrunners Eric and Julia Lewald, plus original series director Larry Houston.
- The new X-Men animated series will be coming to Disney+ in 2023.
