In celebration of Earth Day, guests and local school children helped the Disneyland® Resort’s horticulture team release 140,000 ladybugs for the benefit of the environment. The educational experience taught students about environmentally friendly gardening practices and the advantages of using beneficial bugs.

Nearly 100 third-grade students from Dr. Peter Marshall Elementary School in Anaheim had the opportunity to take science outside of the classroom and into a living laboratory. The interactive lesson gave horticulture cast members a chance to share their knowledge with the students.

For the last 10 years, the horticulture team has implemented an integrated pest management system. The Resort’s pest management program reduces the use of pesticides by introducing beneficial bugs, including ladybugs and green lacewings, into the landscape to control pests.

The pest management system is only one of the Resort’s “green” horticulture initiatives. A sophisticated irrigation system measures moisture in the ground, signaling sprinklers to turn on only when needed thereby reducing water usage. Also, landscape waste is used to create mulch and all plant containers are recycled.
