On June 26th Disneyland had an anniversary celebration for the Haunted Mansion featuring live Grim Grinning Ghosts and a panel discussion with five Imagineers. An event so big it'll take two articles to cover. Here's part one.

When hinges creak in doorless chambers and strange and frightening sounds echo through the halls…over 1,000 Disneyland fans gather together to celebrate the 30th Anniversary of the Haunted Mansion.

Passing it’s a small world the familiar green outfits of the Haunted Mansion Cast Members can be seen. An unusual sight in Fantasyland but this is an unusual evening at the Magic Kingdom.

The Fantasyland Theater has undergone a disquieting metamorphosis. The stage is covered in cobwebs, coffins, tombstones, and flickering candelabras. An organist is performing Disney tunes in a hauntingly minor key.

Over 1,000 Haunted Mansion fans are exchanging stories of their day’s activities. Most tell of their glorious new purchases and some have sad tales of missing out on various items of memorabilia. The greatest success belongs to those who attained the 13 track CD. There were only 999 of these treasures available and they sold out within two and a half hours. Many fans are proudly wearing their new t-shirts, jackets and pins. The organ music begins to fade and the audience settles into their seats.
