Disney's Grand Californian Makes Grand Debut

By John Frost

The Disneyland resort's newest hotel sprouts from the unique tradition of the California craftsman style of architecture made famous by Greene & Greene and sprinkles on a little Frank Lloyd Wright for additional flavoring. Disney's The Grand Californian successfully delivers another ingredient that makes Disneyland a world class destination resort.

The hotel itself is located in what was formerly Disneyland's parking lot. That prime real estate is now shared by Disney's California Adventure, Downtown Disney, and the Grand Californian. The close proximity allows for a first ever entry way into a Disney theme park straight from the hotel property. That's sure to be a big selling point for guests. The easy access to the hotel's dining from California Adventure is something I plan to exploit many times over.

Since the Grand Californian is located smack dab in the middle of it all, its exterior is somewhat muted. But, while the outside appearance is understated the interior is full of wonderful detail, both architecturally and thematically.

The Grand Californian capitalizes on two great traditions. First it borrows from the great American outdoor lodge in its look and feel. Second, it takes many of the best features from other Disney resorts around the world (such as Wilderness Lodge in Orlando, and Sequoia Lodge in Paris) and delivers them in a beautiful package to the original Magic Kingdom.

Looking down into the main lobby

The main lobby of the hotel astounds with its beauty. The hard work and craftsmanship that went into the construction shines through in every detail. Over 30 artisans worked to create the masterpieces that fill the hotel. From beautiful lamps, to tables with inlaid wood, to chandeliers that illuminate the hall perfectly, you'll want to spend lots of time exploring after checking in.

Elsewhere in the main area of the hotel you'll find works of art that depict the history, industry, and agriculture of California. There is also a souvenir shop full of goodies to commemorate your visit to the hotel and California Adventure.
