Living the Disney Life

Once Upon a Time...
December 28, 2006

Today is Rebekah and my 9th anniversary and we're going to spend it doing something wonderful - we're attending the wedding of a friend at Walt Disney World. This wedding further illustrates the Disney Life as we met the bride, Susie, at a Disneyland scavenger hunt many years ago. We've met up with her many times since then at Disneyland and then we both moved to Florida around the same time where we've also kept in touch.

The view from the wedding pavilion

Her wedding was held at the Disney Wedding Pavilion between the Polynesian and Grand Floridian hotels. It was our first time attending a wedding there and we were very impressed. Aside from pretty subtle Hidden Mickeys on some grates, there's nothing Disney about the location except the amazing view of Cinderella's Castle through the window aligned perfectly with the vow location. Rebekah's a little better with the details so I'll lift a post of hers from the Discussion Boards on the wedding itself...

The ceremony was beautiful with Disney touches in the music. But my jaw dropped when the rings were asked for and the groomsman turned out their pockets looking for it. The bride and groom were looking, too. Suddenly a trumpet fanfare fills the pavilion and one of the coachman marches down the aisle with a glass slipper containing the needed rings. The recessional was a magnificent rendition of Main Street Electrical Parade.

The reception was at the Boardwalk's Atlantic Dance Hall which was a real treat as I'd only been in there once before. The views from the second floor of the Boardwalk and Yacht and Beach Clubs were wonderful ... but I digress. Back to Rebekah...

At the wedding reception the couple danced to a romantic version of Disney World's "Remember" -- the lyrics changed to reflect the way couples can awaken a new point of view within one another. Mickey and Minnie were special guests at the reception. Mickey danced with the bride, her mom and other ladies of the wedding party while Minnie danced with the Groom, and the bride's father. Really nice treat.

Peter Pan also showed up and all three helped cut the cake then hung around for pictures and autographs. I'd often wondered what it was like when characters go to wedding receptions. Now I know - all very well done. And truly, what a treat it was to go to a wedding on your anniversary. It reminded me of how absolutely joyous I was on that day nine years ago, and it reminded me of how wonderful marriage is.

Later in the evening we were able to meet up with two friends we've met through LaughingPlace.com, Mark Wharff (who writes our weekly Trivia Contest) and his wife Laura. We sat and chatted near Canada, watched Illuminations and the spectacular Peace on Earth finale, and chatted some more. They're a couple of wonderful people and I'm glad they took time out of their short trip to catch up with us.

And that was it for this Disney day ... except getting home. It is, after all, Christmas week, and the traffic was horrendous. It took quite a while to get from Epcot to the last "All Guest Areas" off ramp. Normally we wouldn't be getting off there, but the traffic continuing on was far worse, so we ducked out there, traveled through the Downtown Disney area, and finally off property and home. As you may have read, parks here at WDW have been closing all week due to crowds. In fact, here is a picture taken after the wedding of cars who entered the Magic Kingdom parking lot toll booths being immediately turned around to the exits.

But despite that - today was a very magical Disney day. Congratulations Susie and Bill and Happy Anniversary to my love, Rebekah.

PS: A few magical things overheard at the park recently

"Look dad, they still have Pixie Dust in the floor" (a child looking at the fiber options in the ground in Future World

"And we were really flying, Dad. Not pretend." (A young boy talking to his father on the Monorail about riding Peter Pan

"(humming)" (A guest humming the tune from El Rio Del Tiempo while walking through World Showcase. Speaking of which - don't forget this ride is going down for some major changes starting January 3rd, so this is your last few days to ride it in its current form
