Walt Disney World

News, Events and Rumors
A new shop has opened at Downtown Disney Marketplace. Disney Tails, which takes over part of the Pooh shop, features merchandise for your pooch and other pets. The store is themed to a social club for your pet (though they aren't allowed inside with you) and features the Disney pet items that have debuted around the Resort the past few months.

A second baby elephant has been born at Animal Kingdom. The 230-pound Kianga (which means "Sunshine" in Swahili) was born July 6th Please click here for the full story and a picture of mommy and baby. Rumors that Groove 66 were on hand to sing a special version of "Walkin' on Kianga" proved false (sorry).

A new Innoventions exhibit has opened featuring Holosonics' Audio Spotlight Sound Beam system which allows sound to be projected to a specific spot like a flashlight. Now that's cool! And coming this summer to Innoventions will be "Fantastic Plastic Works" from the Society of Plastics Industry. Maybe not so cool. But you never know.

On July 22nd the Pleasure Island Battle of the Bands 9 will be held at Rock & Roll Beach Club. The winner will receive a one-night contract to perform at Pleasure Island. The winner will be announced at 1:30a  Scheduled bands include VOW at 8:45p (from Helena, AL), Born into Kaos at 10:05p (local), One Wants at 11:25p (baton Rouge, LA). 21 Complaints at 12:40a (Tampa and Pasco County, FL).

Also coming up at Pleasure Island, a couple of events daddy might enjoy. On July 15th the finalists will audition for next season's Orlando Magic Dancer Team. And on July 30th the Tampa Bar Buccaneer Cheerleaders will appear. Both events will take place at the Pleasure Island Hub Stage.

For the kids, there's the DJ Dock Stage Kids' Party. July 7-10, 14-17, 21-24 and 28-31 at the Downtown Disney Marketplace. Fun music and giveaways for children of all ages.

In an earlier Report we mentioned tee times could be reserved for Fantasia Gardens mini golf. Well you can do it at Winter Summerland now as well. The tee time must be reserved at the location, not on the phone. The time can be set for however long the current wait is or for a later time in the day.

This week began "Mickey's Pin Trading Afternoons". They're held on Wednesdays from 2p - 6p at the Port Orleans French Quarter Resort (in the main building).

From the Department of Refurbishment Department: Mickey's ToonTown Fair train station has reopened and the Tomorrowland Stage in the Magic Kingdom is no more.

The Food and Wine Festival (did I mention food is my favorite subject) runs from October 1st through November 14th at Epcot. But you don't need to wait that long to start getting psyched. Reservations for special events open at 7:00 a.m.

One of great hidden gems of Walt Disney World, the Ft Wilderness movie under the stars. The big screen, the sing-a-long, the roasted marshmallows, the bugs (they're not that bad). Here's the schedule of upcoming films in July:

  • 10: Lilo and Stitch
  • 11: The Aristocats
  • 12: The Great Mouse Detective
  • 13: Toy Story
  • 14: Snowball Express
  • 15: The Emperor's New Groove
  • 16: The Lion King
  • 17: Monster's Inc.
  • 18: Sleeping Beauty
  • 19: The Apple Dumpling Gang Rides Again
  • 20: The Goofy Movie

  • 27: 102 Dalmatians

And finally, the big news of the week (really ... I've been waiting for this moment) - on July 1 the street that runs in front of the Old Key West and Saratoga Springs Resorts was renamed from Community Drive to Disney Vacation Club Way. Bet you can't wait for the pictures.
