NASA Launches New Education Initiative With Disney Parks and Buzz Lightyear - (DL) (5/29/2008)

 

 

 

As seven, well-trained astronauts begin an important mission to the International Space Station on Saturday, May 31, one toy astronaut, Buzz Lightyear, will begin a journey to help educate children across the country. The liftoff of space shuttle Discovery kicks off a new education initiative between NASA and Disney Parks. A 12-inch-tall Buzz Lightyear action figure will be carried aboard the shuttle as part of the partnership to encourage students to pursue studies in science, technology and mathematics, one of NASA's main educational goals.

The Disney Magic cruise ship returned to the Port of Los Angeles this morning, making it easier than ever for guests residing in Southern California to experience Disney Cruise Line’s highly popular seven-night cruises to the Mexican Riviera. The ship is on the West Coast for a limited engagement, sailing just 12 cruises this summer, but staterooms are available for select voyages throughout the season. The ship is scheduled to sail back to Port Canaveral, Fla. on Aug. 17. Disney Cruise Line developed the special itinerary in response to overwhelmingly positive feedback about its original West Coast sailings in 2005 and requests from guests who wanted to see the ship once again depart from the Port of Los Angeles.

Heather King (Orlando, Fla.) won the Disney’s Women Run the World 15K on Sunday during the Third Annual Disney’s Minnie Marathon Weekend at the Walt Disney World Resort near Orlando, Fla. Running in her first 15K race, King was hardly challenged during the 9.3 mile course as she posted a time of 1:00:49 to win by nearly two minutes. Cheryl Edwards (Avon, Conn.) crossed the line in second with a time of 1:02:37 and Courtney Phillips (Jacksonville, Fla.) finished third at 1:02:46. In the Master’s division, Sue O’Malley (Port Orange, Fla.) won in a time of 1:04:20 followed by Maureen Powers (Kissimmee, Fla.) at 1:08:27.

The Walt Disney Company Takes Control of Disney Stores in North America - (DL) (5/1/2008)

The Walt Disney Company (NYSE:DIS) today announced that it has acquired the Disney Store chain in North America from subsidiaries of The Childrens Place Retail Stores, Inc. As a result of the transaction, which consisted of an asset purchase by Disneys subsidiaries through the bankruptcy and insolvency proceedings of Hoop Retail Stores, LLC in Delaware and Hoop Canada, Inc. in Canada, Disney acquired approximately 220 Disney Stores in the United States and Disney Stores in Canada, with actual number of acquired stores dependent upon the outcome of negotiations with landlords. Disney also obtained the right to conduct an orderly wind-down and closure of approximately 98 Disney Stores in the United States and two Disney Stores in Canada, but without assuming the leases for such stores.

The Lion King Receives 3 Moliere Awards Including Best Musical in Paris, France - (DL) (5/1/2008)
The Lion King (‘Le Roi Lion’) received three Moliere Awards (France’s Tony Award) on Tuesday, April 29 for Best Musical, Best Costumes and Best Lighting for the French production, which is playing at the Théâtre Mogador in Paris. After opening the Moliere Award’s ceremony on the stage with “The Circle of Life,” the musical received the approval of the evening, not only with the voters of the Academy but also with the audience who was attending the ceremony at the Folies Bergere. With 350,000 spectators in seven months, the extension through August 3rd, and now the announcement of the new season beginning August 19th at Théâtre Mogador, THE LION KING is the theatrical event of the year.
