Golden 50th Anniversary of Walt Disney's Beloved Animated Masterpiece Cinderella Celebrated by the Walt Disney Classics Collection with Introduction of Memorable Glass Slipper Scene

“Happily Ever After” Moment Debuts in February 2000

The Walt Disney Classics Collection captures the most memorable “happily ever after” moment in fairytale history - the glass slipper scene from Walt Disney’s classic animated film Cinderella. The five-piece scene recreates the moment when Cinderella quietly pulls the glass slipper from her apron pocket and reveals to all that she was the beautiful stranger who danced with the Prince at the ball. February 15, 2000, marks the 50th anniversary of the film (originally released on February 15, 1950).

The pieces will make their debut at Cinderella's Royal 50th Anniversary Celebration to be held February 12, 2000 at the Disneyland Hotel.

Renowned sculptor Kent Melton studied original model sheets to recreate each character in rich detail. Each facial expression is perfectly captured - from the evil Stepmother’s angry dismay to Cinderella’s heartwarming joy. The open-edition scene includes: Cinderella, Lady Tremaine (Stepmother), the jealous Drizella and Anastasia (Stepsisters) and the Grand Duke.

As an exclusive benefit, members of the popular Walt Disney Collectors Society will also have an opportunity to complete the scene with one additional sculpture -- the Royal Footman, carrying the glass slipper on a pillow. The entire scene including the members-only sculpture will be available beginning in February 2000.

A hallmark of the Walt Disney Classics Collection is its attention to detail and the new Cinderella scene is a perfect example. Real glass slippers appear in the Grand Duke’s hand and on the Footman’s pillow, giving Walt Disney Collectors Society members the chance to own a complete pair of glass slippers. Not even Cinderella could claim that honor. Lady Tremaine holds a bronze staff and wears a genuine green agate stone in her gold-painted brooch, while Cinderella sits on a porcelain chair “plussed” with bronze and pewter arms and legs.

Suggested retail prices for the hand-crafted, hand-painted porcelain sculptures are: Cinderella $225, Lady Tremaine $165, Anastasia $145, Drizella $145, Grand Duke $150 and Royal Footman $125. In honor of the film’s 50th anniversary, each sculpture will bear a special gold backstamp commemorating the milestone occasion.

Cinderella is a long-time favorite among Disney collectors and movie fans alike. When it premiered in 1950, Cinderella was considered Disney’s “come back” film, giving the studio its first big hit after World War II. Based on the most famous fairy tale of all time, Walt Disney’s Cinderella gave the age-old story new charm through the introduction of a brand-new cast of characters including the evil cat Lucifer, Cinderella’s faithful dog Bruno and the lovable mice Gus and Jaq.

Cinderella was nominated for three Academy Awards® including Best Song (“Bibbidi-Bobbidi-Boo”), Best Scoring of a Musical Picture and Best Sound. Additionally, the film won the following awards: Parents Magazine Medal Award, Box Office Blue Ribbon Award, Cine Revue Magazine Award, Venice Film Festival Special Prize and the Berlin Film Festival First Prize Award.
