Cal Ripken Day

It's the Little Things: Remember these? National Agriculture Day, Cal Ripken Day, Laker Day, Rose Bowl Day. Probably not. But if you were a kid on a field trip, a Cal Ripken fan or one of the thousands in town for the NCAA Football National Championship, you might. While events like these don't make headlines, I think they do a lot for Disney's California Adventure. They hone in on the fact that the park is about California and gives it a more community feel. After all, Disneyland has long been an ambassador for California to the world and events like these are just one more way to welcome locals and out-of-towners alike. Big things like Tower of Terror are necessary for the future of DCA. But it's the little things that Disney has always been famous for and these events are great "little things.". At least that's my view and I really hope they continue.

Goodbye 2001: What do on the final day of 2001? Staying home seemed a reasonable option given how cold it usually is. Work was also a strong possibility since I had a big job due only two days later. But we couldn't resist seeing the first New Year's Eve at Disney's California Adventure, so that's where we found ourselves. The first thing we noticed was we could move. Disneyland is notorious for being jam packed on New Year's Eve, but DCA was comfortably crowded - no where near unbearable. We spent most of the evening just walking around to see all the entertainment - The Fab Four in Hollywood, some stuff in Condor Flats that was right on the edge of "ok for Disney", a DJ along the Performance Corridor - but finally settled in Paradise Pier where the beach party was going on. The countdown itself was botched but that didn't matter much. Fireworks, beach balls and two quick rides on California Screamin (2002 - the double-double year) later and 2001 faded away...

And now...
In my first year-end column two weeks ago, I mentioned there were three big things LaughingPlace.com was working for 2002. Well the first of those things is almost ready to debut. It's called LaughingPlace Radio and starting today we're having a public preview leading up to it's official launch in the not-too-distant future. For more information or to take a listen, just go to LaughingPlace.com/Radio.
