This weekend
Ah, the first weekend of October. It seems like I started this column just a week ago and here we are a whole month later. In my first column I set the standard with a beautifully written article that took me endless hours to write, and now I. . .ahem.. . . well. . . I guess I've just gotten better at writing fast. :-)

2 new releases open this weekend, The School of Rock from Paramount and Out of Time for MGM.

Denzel Washington is the star in the police thriller Out of Time. Washington is a respected actor and usually is able to draw a crowd on opening weekend. With over 2,600 theaters Out of Time should be able to pull in $19.4 million and challenge the School of Rock for the top spot.

The School of Rock stars Jack Black in a story about how a rocker shows a group of ten year olds how to start a rock band. Jack Black has a following and with little competition for the teen comedy market out right now it should post some strong first weekend numbers. Look for The School of Rock to open with about $18.4 million dollars.

The Rundown had a somewhat weak first weekend of $18.6 million. This weekend it could fall a somewhat large 49% to $9.5 million

Under the Tuscan Sun had a very strong first weekend. The movie seems to be generating good buzz and there is no other "chick-flick" type movie out right now. Under the Tuscan Sun should have a gentle fall of 22% to $7.6 million.

Secondhand Lions also is generating good buzz and has little competition. A respectable fall of 33% would give it $5.6 million in it's third week.

Underworld has had weak legs and looks to be heading for a 52% fall for $9.4 million.

Lost in Translation should remain at last week's total of $3.7 million.

The Fighting Temptations has had some low mid-week grosses, but it should rebound a bit on the weekend. A 45% drop would give the film $3.5 million.

Matchstick Men and Once Upon a Time in Mexico will pick up around $2.5 million in their fourth weekend.

If it were a Disney film. . .Out of Time would be a live-action documentary showing the meeting where Disney execs finally decided what do for Disneyland's 50th anniversary. The only problem is that it happened on July 16th, 2005.
