“Spider-Man: Homecoming” Trailer Review

When Peter Parker popped up in Captain America: Civil War, we saw the best version of the character to ever grace the silver screen. He was witty, quick and most importantly — a teenager. I was immediately sold that this was the future of the franchise. After seeing tonight’s release of the first full trailer for the 2017 release/reboot Spider-Man: Homecoming, I’m even more convinced than before.

Already I can hear the naysayers. “Where’s MJ?” “Peter was a loner, so he couldn’t have a friend that knows his secret!” “Peter Parker should be played by an American!” Well, get over it. This is happening. And it promises to deliver on all that we’ve come to expect from a Marvel Cinematic Universe release: humor, action, and emotion.

From what I could see during this very exciting glimpse, we have an exceptional high school boy that was allowed to take a peek behind the curtain of a bigger world when he was pulled into the Avengers’ Big Disagreement. As such, he is no longer content catching the nickel and dime crooks that he’s facing during his patrols, and he wants to cast for the big fish. Tony Stark, i.e. the man behind the curtain, is trying to both develop and restrain Peter, and of course, Parker pushes back against Stark’s control, maybe taking on a challenge for which is not prepared.

This two-minute preview delivers all the typical beats of a mega-hit trailer— the lowly hero, desire for more, the villain, the gigantic threat, and of course, the messianic imagery that leaves no doubt in our mind that it is only Spider-Man that can save us all.

Oh, and did I mention there is a brief appearance by four “Avengers”? Summer 2017 can’t swing around fast enough.
