Now we are 10

Its been a long but fun five years since Disneyland Paris celebrated its first major milestone, its fifth birthday in 1997. There has been four new theme parks, a huge millennium celebration and numerous park birthdays around the world. This Magic Kingdom though, has been quietly shoring up the ground it lost during its first years of operation, and has focused on seasonal celebrations, especially with the very successful Halloween events. It has also in the past year or so undergone rehabs and maintenance including a very thorough renewal of its a small world. There has only been one ‘new’ attraction - Honey, I Shrunk the Audience, and some memorable new shows in that time.

The celebration in 1997 was a huge showy affair, with an emphasis of finally saying we’ve arrived. The castle was doled up in jesters’ masks, the Central Plaza featured three huge tolling bells, topped with the gargoyles from the flavour of the year (especially in France) - The Hunchback of Notre Dame. The 5th birthday itself saw a large one off parade with Mickey on a cake and the unveiling of the Disney Legends Statue in Fantasia Gardens.
