Book Review – Lola the Therapy Dog

Every pet owner knows the sad truth that their dog is not welcome at the Magic Kingdom, unless he or she is a therapy dog. Author, special educator and Lola’s owner Marcia Goldman introduces the world to her adorable little terrier who became a therapy dog against the odds. All Disney classics are underdog stories at heart, but Lola’s adventures are literal underdog stories.

Lola Goes to WorkLola’s story begins in her first book, Lola Goes to Work, which is a hardcover picture book using real images of Lola during her training. All the other dogs in her training school were big, but she was determined to not let that stop her. Once her training is complete, Lola makes the world a better place by visiting people who are sick to cheer them up.

Lola Goes to the DoctorIn her second adventure, Lola learns that the vet isn’t such a scary place in Lola Goes to the Doctor. Lola is nervous and scared when it’s time for her checkup, but seeing the other brave animals in the waiting room sets her at ease. And as a reward for being a good girl, she even gets a treat in the end.

Lola and Tattletale ZekeLastly, Lola gets a big little brother in Lola and Tattletale Zeke. Zeke may be bigger than Lola, but she’s still older than him. The two dogs get along great, except that Zeke often gets Lola in trouble by telling on her when she does something naughty. But Lola proves that good siblings don’t get even and in the end, Zeke learns that he shouldn’t tell on Lola, especially when she has an accident that she couldn’t help.

In addition to the three books that are already available, a fourth one is coming this July called Lola Goes to School. Each book features an educator’s guide and Marcia Goldman’s website also features lots of ideas for incorporating these books into a school lesson plan. Kids who can’t get enough of Lola can also have their very own therapy dog with the Lola plush. It takes a special kind of dog to be a therapy dog and Lola will quickly work her way into your heart. I highly recommend Lola’s stories for all kids as they teach great lessons and are a lot of fun to read. I found myself chuckling several times at the adorable text and pictures found within.
