Interview with Ant-Man and the Wasp’s Abby Ryder Fotson

With Ant-Man and the Wasp set for release, many reviews have hit and most point out a key characteristic of the movie that makes it unique to the Marvel Cinematic Universe is the role the hero’s family plays in the movie. Scott Lang’s role as a father drives his actions and his inactions. Scott’s connection to Cassie is the heart of the film that grounds the fun superhero romp.

Abby Ryder Fortson returns as Cassie Lang in Ant-Man and the Wasp.  The three years since we last saw Cassie have brought her some maturity while still being fun-loving. She is able to help her father throughout the film so that he can be the hero that she wants him to be. As Forston says, “Cassie has been spending lots of time with her dad and is so happy because he actually shows her what it’s like to be a superhero when they play. Her mom and Paxton aren’t anti-superhero, but they don’t want him to get in trouble again. But Cassie knows if they find out he’s Ant-Man again, they will try to stop him, so she hides it from them to save her dad. She knows he’s doing something good to help Hope and Hank Pym.”

It doesn’t take long with Abby to realize where her understanding of family comes from, as she obviously comes from one that cares deeply about each other. While she gets plenty of acting tips from her family, she does have an acting role model. She loves Emma Watson and that is why the recent remake of Beauty and the Beast  is one of her favorite Disney films. When asked about other Disney films she enjoys she brings up another film starring a legendary actress: “Maleficent is such a great story and it actually shows you that most people aren’t actually evil, just from evilness. It’s more that they usually have a background of why they do things.

Since we were on the topic of her favorite Disney things, we had to ask her about her favorite Disney Parks attractions. Her answers would satisfy any Disney fan: “I really like Pirates of the Caribbean because of the waterfall, going underground, and floating in the river. And I like Haunted Mansion because we went during The Nightmare Before Christmas version of it and I really like that movie.”

In the comics, Cassie Lang grows up to be a hero. As far as I am concerned, Abby is already a hero. But what super power would Abby like to have? “I would have the ability to change into anything but still have my mind.” Excellent choice.
