What “Captain Marvel” Could Mean for the Future of the MCU

We are just a few months removed from the arrival of a brand new captain in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Disney is preparing for her arrival with their new #HigherFurtherFaster campaign, which will bring Captain Marvel to Disney Parks, the Disney Store and shopDisney.

What will Carol Danvers bring to the MCU though? After the events of Avengers: Infinity War, Marvel fans are left in a spot where they are desperate for some help for their favorite heroes. Will Captain Marvel be the answer?

The short answer here is as simple no. Sorry to burst your bubble, but Captain Marvel alone is no match for Thanos. Captain Marvel joining the remaining heroes will still be no match for Thanos. A lot of fan responses to the Captain Marvel trailer were along the lines of “Thanos should be scared.” Again, I’m sorry, but no, he should not.

Let’s revisit what happened in Avengers: Infinity War. Thanos, thanks to the power of the Infinity Gauntlet, snapped his fingers and half of all life in the universe vanished. Thanos literally has full control of time, space, mind, soul, power and reality. Captain Marvel is strong. She’s not that strong. In fact, Captain Marvel has struggled with Thanos in the comics.

And by the way, Thanos decimated our favorite heroes in far more gruesome and dramatic fashion in the comics. For example, he turned Wolverine’s adamantium skeleton into rubber, trapped Cyclops in a cube and suffocated him, turned Thor into glass and smashed him and so much more.

The news isn’t all bad though. Like I said, Captain Marvel is very powerful and one of her most useful powers is ‘Cosmic Awareness,’ which would allow her to locate anyone or any event in the universe that could potentially affect her. Looks like we found a way to save Tony Stark.

Captain Marvel will likely be the glue that brings our team of heroes back together for one more fight against Thanos. In the end though, it will likely be Thanos’ own hubris that defeats him, not Captain Marvel herself.

Cap’s impact on the MCU will go well beyond Avengers: Endgame though. Captain Marvel itself may be very important for the future of the MCU, perhaps even more so than the infinity War sequel.

The new film will introduce the existence of Skrulls to the MCU, a species of shape-shifting aliens that have been a thorn in the side of Earth’s Mightiest Heroes for a long time. These menacing monsters are the primary villains of the popular “Secret Invasion” story arc, one of the biggest in the history of Marvel Comics.

The storyline sees the skrulls impersonate many of our favorite heroes, pitting the Avengers against one another and leaving them with no one to trust. It would make for an action-packed and suspenseful team-up film to follow the Infinity saga.

Aside from that though, Captain Marvel’s introduction to the MCU will give the team something much more important: a new leader. It’s no secret that Captain America and Iron Man are on their way out. Bucky will likely take over the moniker of Captain America, but maybe not the role of the leader of the Avengers. Captain Marvel might just be the new captain of the Avengers.

Captain Marvel is going to be a game changer for the MCU and the hype surrounding the upcoming film is certainly very high. In fact, It’s one of our 19 biggest Disney things coming in 2019.

Captain Marvel will hit theaters March 8. How do you think her presence will impact the future of the MCU? Let us know in the comments below.
