Disney Reportedly Demanding Larger Box Office Cut for “The Last Jedi”

You may have heard it said that most movie theatres don’t make a ton of money off of the tickets themselves, instead making up their margins on concessions and other items. With that in mind, Disney is reportedly demanding to receive a higher percentage of ticket sales for their upcoming film The Last Jedi. According to Deadline, Disney is requesting 65% of the box office take at some cinemas while also requiring them to play the film the largest auditorium for at least the first four weeks of its run. Additionally, violating these terms would apparently result in a 5% penalty. However, Deadline notes that terms can vary from theatre to theatre.

As a side note, this news comes shortly after Regal Cinemas — the country’s second-largest exhibitor — announced that it would be testing dynamic ticket pricing in which less popular films were cheaper to attend than hit ones. However, this program won’t be implemented until early 2018, likely catching the tail end of The Last Jedi’s run if not missing it entirely.

Meanwhile, The Last Jedi hits theatres December 15th.
