What’s happening:

  • Marvel’s Kevin Feige is teaming up with Lucasfilm’s Kathleen Kennedy to produce a new Star Wars film for the studio, according to The Hollywood Reporter. The news was announced late on Wednesday evening.
  • While Feige’s name has become ubiquitous with Marvel and its properties, he’s also a big fan of the “galaxy far, far away.”
  • Some say this move is just paving the way for Feige to have a larger role within Lucasfilm, while others believe he’s simply passionate about this other universe.
  • THR says Feige had a meeting with Kennedy and Walt Disney Studios Chairmen Alan Horn and Alan Bergman, late in the summer to discuss his involvement with future Star Wars projects.
  • If things shape up the way it seems they will, the Star Wars universe could soon include a project overseen and produced by the Marvel President.
  • Interestingly Feige has told “a major actor that there's a specific role he would like that person to play if and when he makes the movie,” according to a source.

Our thought bubble:

  • Feige seems like a natural and exciting choice to join the Star Wars galaxy, whether for one movie or several.
  • His massive and near perfect success with the Marvel Cinematic Universe proves he’s great at developing interesting characters and stories within franchises that have a strong, dedicated, and demanding fan base.

The future of Star Wars:

  • It’s been over forty years since A New Hope made its debut telling the story of Luke Skywalker, Leia Organa, Han Solo, and the Imperial forces led by Darth Vader.
  • Now known as the Skywalker Saga, the final entry is about to premiere in theaters with The Rise of Skywalker  slated for a December 20, 2019 release.
  • While fans will be saying goodbye to Luke, Leia, and Vader, Lucasfilm has already announced plans for two new trilogies.
  • The Last Jedi director, Rian Johnson, is developing a trio of films and so are Game of Thrones showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss.
  • At this time there’s been no announcement of what era of the Star Wars universe either is working with for their films.
  • Star Wars is also coming to Disney+ with the first ever live-action TV series for the franchise, The Mandalorian premiering on November 12.
  • Developed by Marvel vetaran Jon Favreau, The Mandalorian is one of the keystone shows that Disney is counting on to help determine a successful launch for the streamer.
  • Finally a Rogue One  series and an Obi-Wan Kenobi series (starring Ewan McGregor or course) are both in development for Disney+ as well.

What they’re saying:

  • Walt Disney Studios co-chairman Alan Horn: "We are excited about the projects Kathy and the Lucasfilm team are working on, not only in terms of Star Wars but also Indiana Jones and reaching into other parts of the company including Children of Blood and Bone with Emma Watts and Fox. With the close of the Skywalker Saga, Kathy is pursuing a new era in Star Wars storytelling, and knowing what a die-hard fan Kevin is, it made sense for these two extraordinary producers to work on a Star Wars film together."
