May 9, 2002

The voice of Disney's California Adventure invited the crowd to welcome the winners of the 2002 Jiminy Cricket Environmentality Challenge. Suddenly, the Sunshine Plaza was alive with the melody Zip A Dee Doo Dah and cheers as an omnibus filled with the 4th and 5th graders from Miano Elementary School along with state dignitaries and Disney executives travelled the semi-circle from the parade gate past the entrance to the Hollywood Backlot before coming to a stop with the Golden Gate Bridge in the background. The students filed in while parents and other guests applauded, took photos and video.

The Disneyland Resort Ambassador to the World, Matt Ebeling was introduced and approached the podium.

Ebeling: Good morning everyone and welcome to Disney's California Adventure. We’re so glad that so many of you could join us this morning as we celebrate the 8th annual Jiminy Cricket's Environmentality Challenge. The Environmentaily Challenge program is the result of a successful partnership between the Walt Disney Company and the state’s environmental education interagency networking. The program encourages students to think and act environmentally at the school, at home and in the community. The challenge empowers grade school children to solve real environment issues.

As a result thousands of California students learn firsthand that they can make a difference. Helping in their efforts a wide range of dignitaries who are dedicated to the growth and protection of our environment some of whom are with us today. Please welcome Vice Chairman of the Board for the Walt Disney Company, Roy E Disney. Next Senior Vice President of Corporate Environment Policy for the Walt Disney Company, Kym Murphy. Also joining us the State Superintendent of Public Instruction for the California Department of Education Deliane Eastin, and the board chair of the California Integrated Waste Management Board Linda Moulton-Patterson. From the California Department of Food and Agriculture Special Assistant Secretary to William Lyons and Executive Director of the State Board of Food and Agriculture Karen Manor, seated next to her is Special Assistant to the Secretary of the Resources Agency, Renee Hoyos and finally please welcome me in giving a special welcome to our guests from Miano Elementary School principal Barbara Ward, and schoolteacher Stephanie Sparks.

This year over 3000 teachers representing more than 90000 fifth grade students throughout the state of California participated in the Jiminy Cricket's Environmentality Challenge. Each class created and implemented their own project, a project that improved the environment in some way. This year’s grand prize winning class made some definite improvements in their local environment that truly benefit one and all. So let’s give one more round of applause to these outstanding environmental heroes from Miano Elementary School. Congratulations, kids!

And now it is my privilege to welcome a true advocate for children and a long time friend to the environment Vice Chairman for the Walt Disney Company, Roy E Disney.
