Marvel Studios has reportedly hired Chloe Zhao to direct of the upcoming addition to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, The Eternals, according to a report from The Hollywood Reporter.

  • The future Marvel film will focus on two super-powered races of humanity who border on immortality, known as the Eternals and the Deviants.
  • Zhao will make the leap to the superhero genre after having directed only two feature-length films (The Rider and Songs My Brother Taught Me).
  • Incidentally, Zhao was reportedly on the shortlist to direct Marvel’s standalone Black Widow film before the position was given to Cate Shortland back in July.
  • Matthew and Ryan Firpo have been tasked with writing the script for the new Marvel film.
  • Marvel Comics legend Jack Kirby created The Eternals with their first appearance coming in their self-titled series in 1976.

More about The Eternals:

  • The Eternals and the Deviants were created as a result of scientific experiments conducted by cosmic beings known as the Celestials on early humanity.
  • The Eternals appear human but have much longer lifespans (though not completely immortal) as well as other superhuman abilities.
  • The Deviants are genetically unstable and grotesque in appearance.
  • Throughout their comic runs, the Eternals have had run ins with familiar Marvel aliens like the Kree and their interactions actually led to the creation of the Inhumans.
