Doobie's List: Top 5 Surprises (and Disappointments) of 2011
Page 1 of 3
Im already late with this column so I wont waste more time with an introduction. Just a quick disclaimer - Im only including things here I saw for myself. So no World of Color, no new Disney Store, etc. And with that caveat I finally present my Top 5 Surprises (and Disappointments) of 2010.
#5 Surprise: AMC Pleasure Island Concession Stand of
the Future
A few months ago we noticed walls were up hiding one of the concession
stands at the Pleasure Island AMC. It was like a secret project with no
visibility at all - not even from the second floor. Then one day we see a
release saying The Concession Stand of the Future is coming and my life
changed for ever. I love going to the movies, I love going to the AMC Pleasure
Island and I love going to the concession stand. When they added pizza a couple
of years ago I jumped for joy (and thats not easy!). But now pizza is just the
beginning mozzarella sticks, skinny cow ice cream, more than 100 varieties of
Coke products, flavored popcorn - and these are just the things my vegeterian
self can enjoy. Its a dream come true. And we still have the Dine-In theater to
look forward to! Hopefully it makes the 2011 list

#5 Disappointment: Summer Nightastic
Ill be honest - I wanted symmetry. I wanted 5 surprises and 5
disappointments and I struggled to find a fifth. I went with Summer Nightastic
not so much for what it was, but for what it wasnt. It wasnt good enough to be
the main summer push for the Walt Disney World Resort. I realize New Fantasyland
is under way but there are four parks and not one of them had anything major
added this spring/summer and thats a disappointment. Top that off with the
major thrust of Summer Nightastic being the Main Street Electrical Parade which
they changed since I last saw and not for the better. The moving lights are cool
when theyre moving. When theyre not (which is most of the time), it looks like
those light bulbs are not working which didnt come off well for me. Its also a
parade - as great and historical that it is - that has already had multiple
send-offs and been used to easily prop up a park more than once already. Come
on, man!
#4 Surprise: LOST Final Season
I love LOST and awaited the sixth and final season with much anticipation.
Other than a slow period at the start of Season 3 it never disappointed me as it
had so many other fans. But come on - how do you satisfactorily end a show like
this. You just cant. You can give all the answers in the world and Ill still
want more. So ultimately I only hoped it would be a fun ride and resolved that
that would be good enough. On ye of little faith! The solution to not giving
enough answers? Dont give hardly any! Just give vague answers to some of the
riddles with the oft-repeated line this is what answers look like on LOST..
It worked for me. But ultimately the reason I felt satisfied was the flash
sideways ending. The package was wrapped up so nice and neat and completely and
beautifully that I just felt fully satisfied that the journey had come to an end
and I was glad to be a part of it. For me, it was truly perfect.

#4 Disappointment: Give-A-Day, Get-A-Day Promotion
What a wonderful concept. On the heels of the come-on-your-birthday-free
promotion Disney Parks introduces a give-a-day-to-charity-and-come-free
promotion. A great idea meant to get 1,000,000 to volunteer. We participated by
cleaning soap for a few hours so those in poorer countries would have this
simple but life saving item. And thousands of others did as well. In fact, by
March they had reached their 1,000,000 volunteer goal and called off the
program. A year-long promotion that lasted until March. Disappointing...
