Despite her work on SCTV, Catherine O'Hara didn’t improvise any of her lines. She said it appeared that Sally was a very precious character. There was a very distinct vision behind her and she did it as scripted.

When asked about the roles of Tim Burton and director Henry Selick on the film Glenn said "the vision and the world is Tim Burton’s." He explained the great combination is that Henry had the patience and dedication to oversee Tim’s vision. Tim wasn’t on the set all the time but it was his vision. Their sensibilities meshed well. Henry made a tremendous contribution to bring Tim’s vision "because I don’t believe Tim would’ve had the patience with it month after month after month…he’s like a hummingbird." Catherine said she never met Tim because he was only there for a few of her recording sessions. Glenn said Tim's magic and spirit are all through the film.
