Critically acclaimed star of HBO’s Insecure, Issa Rae, is set to venture into the animated Spider-Verse where she has reportedly been cast in the sequel to the 2018 hit, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
What’s Happening:
- Star of HBO’s Insecure, Issa Rae is reportedly set to enter the Spider-Verse in the sequel to Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse from Sony Pictures Animation.
- Reportedly, Rae is set to voice Jessica Drew, AKA Spider-Woman.
- This is the first addition to a cast that already includes Shemeik Moore and Hailee Steinfeld who are returning to provide the voices of Spider-Man and Spider-Gwen.
- Plot details for the film are scarce, but we are expecting to see a “multi”-tude of Spider-characters from the vast expanse of the Marvel Universe.
- In the original film, Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, Brooklyn Teen Miles Morales is bitten by a radioactive spider on a subway and suddenly develops mysterious powers that transform him into the one and only Spider-Man. When he meets Peter Parker, he soon realizes that there are many others who share his special, high-flying talents. Miles must now use his newfound skills to battle the evil Kingpin, a hulking madman who can open portals to other universes and pull different versions of Spider-Man (including Spider-Man Noir, Peni Parker and Spider-Ham) into our world.
- Issa Rae, widely known for her critically-acclaimed performance in HBO’s Insecure, is currently filming the final season of that show and working on a second season of A Black Lady Sketch Show where she serves as an executive producer.
- The sequel to Spider-Verse is set to be directed by directors Kemp Powers (Soul), Joaquim Dos Santos, and Justin K. Thompson, and is set to be released on October 7th, 2022.
