TV Review: Disney Channel’s “Andi Mack”

Life doesn’t always point you in a clear direction, but we feel like family is something we can always fall back on. But, what happens when all that you thought you knew, wasn’t exactly the truth?

Disney Channel will be premiering it’s newest television series, Andi Mack, on April 7th. The show is centered around Andi, a spunky, almost-13-year-old, that is just trying to survive middle school and find her own way, mostly against her strict mother’s wishes. Just days before her birthday, her older sister Bex finds her way back home with life changing news for Andi. How can Andi regain trust after learning the truth about her family, and more importantly, how can she move forward?

Disney Channel’s “Andi Mack”

I had seen the commercials aired on the Disney Channel for this new series and I was really interested! The first thing that caught my attention was that this new series was created by Terri Minksy, the creator of Lizzie McGuire — one of my favorite shows back in the day. Andi certainly felt a little reminiscence of Lizzie, but it was great throwback for me. The cast worked really well together, especially Andi’s sister Bex that has been anything but present in her sister’s life. She perfectly portrayed that prodigal child that comes back, ready to be a part of the family.

Without giving away too much, after learning about the big secret all the trailers are teasing (you find out at the end of the pilot), I was actually quite surprised, but in a good way! This series will prove to have some hard hitting questions. I really hope that it does well and that it starts a conversation about choices you make in life, and how you move on in the best way. I think it could be a great way to talk with your kids about how we handle situations in our lives that we don’t expect, and how they can sometimes make you a better person as well.

The pilot and first episode are currently available on the Disney Channel app, but as mentioned above, the series will air on the Disney Channel on April 7th. I would suggest watching the pilot with your children to answer any questions they might have, and who knows, you might find yourself going back to find out what happens to the Mack family!

Lauren has been a Disney fan all her life. On her first birthday, she received a copy of the Disney Sing-a-long, Disneyland Fun, and ever since that, she's been hardcore in learning everything she can about the park. Another one of her favorite aspects is the food and she enjoys recreating those recipes to share with her friends and family. She also loves any craft that she can add a little bit of Disney magic or a hidden Mickey to make more magical.
