Soundtrack Review: “Incredibles 2”

Michael Giacchino’s career scoring major motion pictures began in 2004 with Disney Pixar’s The Incredibles, which earned him a Grammy nomination and opened the door to a decade of iconic scores, making him one of the most sought after composers in he industry. His score for Incredibles 2 is now available through the Original Motion Picture Soundtrack, allowing fans to relive this jazzy and eclectic score anytime, anywhere.

The main theme from the first film is reused often, making the first listen a lot of fun each time it appears. The 1960’s inspired instruments make this another eclectic listen with winds, horns, and high hats making frequent appearances. At times it becomes reminiscent of Robert F. Brunner’s score for That Darn Cat to represent some of Mrs. Incredibles super sleuthing moments, but otherwise maintains the spirit of the original film.

There are a few new themes here and there across this 36-track album, but the end-credits mix is called “Incredibles 2,” which gives you a sampling of the most memorable melodies. At nearly 10-minutes long, this track is the perfect choice when adding a selection of music from Incredibles 2 to a playlist.

There are three actual songs in the film, which appear in an extended format than what is heard in the credits. They are “Here Comes Elastigirl – Elastigirl’s Theme,” “Chill or be Chilled – Frozone’s Theme,” and “Pow! Pow! Pow! – Mr. Incredible’s Theme.” The chorus of each are played towards the end of the credits, but you get the full tracks here. As bonus tracks, all three songs are covered by DCapella, as well as a track called “The Glory Days” where they perform the score acapella. Two additional songs are less than 10-seconds long each, the lead-in and bumper for the talk show in the film, “Chad Tonight.”

While the score retreads a lot of the same territory without adding much in the way of memorable new themes, the soundtrack still offers a great listen outside of the film. The addition of retro-sounding theme songs for the three adult leads adds extra value and those three tracks are must-haves for any Disney music collectors. You can take the epic theme music of Disney Pixar’s Incredibles 2 along for your own adventures with the Original Motion Picture Soundtrack.
