SDCC 2019: Our Nine Favorite Disney and Marvel Cosplays from San Diego Comic-Con 2019

San Diego Comic-Con 2019 has come and gone, but it’s not officially over until we take a look back at some of the very cool cosplay we saw around the convention center during the annual pop culture celebration in Southern California.

We’ve chosen our nine favorite cosplays from SDCC 50, and I’m going to divide these into two categories: Disney proper and Marvel, since the Marvel Studios panel probably generated more buzz than anything else coming out of the event this past weekend.

#9 – Kim Possible and Ron Stoppable (see above) – The two main characters from the 2002-2007 Disney Channel animated series Kim Possible (and its 2019 live-action feature-length DCOM) were captured to perfection by two patient attendees waiting in line for Hall H.

#8 – Dick Tracy and Breathless Mahoney – The characters played by Warren Beatty and Madonna in Buena Vista Pictures’ 1990 feature film Dick Tracy (not to mention the famous 1930s comic strip that inspired it) showed up on the second level of the San Diego Convention Center.

#7 – Maui – We saw this perfectly realized Polynesian demigod (voiced by Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson in Disney’s Moana) waiting in line for Indigo Ballroom. The most impressive part of this costume was definitely how accurate the tattoos were, down to the last detail.

#6 – Darkwing Duck – She is the terror that flaps in the night! This dedicated fan made it into the front row for Disney Channel’s DuckTales panel on Friday morning, and there must have been trouble, because DW even got called up to the dais by the show’s cast and creators in congratulations on such an accurate ensemble.

#5 – Gabby Gabby and Forky – Disney/Pixar’s Toy Story 4 only recently came out in theaters, but this fan managed to put together an authentic representation of the movie’s villain Gabby Gabby and her kidnapping victim Forky. I hope Woody was around somewhere nearby the Bayfront Hilton to save him!

#4 – Vacation Mode Galactus – Where does the Eater of Worlds go when he needs a vacation? San Diego Comic-Con’s exhibit hall floor, of course! Now we’ve entered into the Marvel section of this list, and where better place to start than with one of the most iconic antagonists from Marvel’s first family, The Fantastic Four?

#3 – Mysterio – Played by actor Jake Gyllenhaal in the recent Spider-Man: Far From Home entry of the MCU, this villain has been around since his first appearance in Stan Lee and Steve Ditko’s The Amazing Spider-Man #13 way back in June of 1964, making this year his 55th anniversary in Marvel Comics! I love the “smoke” effect in the helmet on this costume we spotted outside the convention center’s front entrance.

#2 – Juggernaut – Certainly one of the larger members of Magneto’s Brotherhood of Evil Mutants, Juggernaut has been a major thorn in the X-Men’s sides since 1965. Actor Vinnie Jones played him in 2006’s X-Men: The Last Stand, and this creative guest was seen wandering around San Diego’s historic Gaslamp Quarter.

#1 – Doctor Strange – In front of the Gaslamp’s Old Spaghetti Factory stood this jaw-droppingly amazing female Doctor Strange cosplayer, with a spot-on outfit inspired by the popular 2016 Marvel Studios film and the character who’s played a major role in Marvel Comics continuity since 1963. But perhaps the most impressive element of this costume was the hand-held LED device that formed convincingly realistic depictions of Stephen Strange’s magic shield. This particular cosplay was so incredible, it helped the above tweet become our most popular content from this year’s Comic-Con, by far!
