Supreme Court Rules in Marvel’s Favor Regarding Spider-Man Web Shooter

The United States Supreme Court ruled in Marvel’s favor in a case involving the popular Spider-Man web shooter toy. Stephen Kimble patented the toy in 1991 and assigned it to Marvel in exchange for a royalty fee. Marvel paid Kimble more than $6 million over the course of the patent, but stopped paying once the patent expired citing a 1964 Supreme Court ruling.

In a 6-3 ruling, the court decided to not overturn the precedent set over 50 years ago. Justice Elena Kagan cited a popular Spider-Man quote in her ruling stating, “”in this world, with great power there must also come – great responsibility.”
