Today Marvel announced (via Time Magazine) that Tony Stark will be stepping aside as Iron Man in the comics. Instead, a new character named Riri Williams will take over the mantle. Well… maybe not as Iron Man… but she’s working on a name.
Yes, Williams is a woman. According to Time, she comes onto Stark’s radar when she builds her own Iron Man-esque suit in her dorm room at MIT (which she enrolled in at age 15). As writer Brian Michael Bendis told Time, “You imagine that Tony has Iron Man armor on his Google Alerts,” adding, “He’s also aware that this young woman is flying by him in terms of how quickly she’s doing it. Her brain is maybe a little better than his.”
