Sparks: Thank you Roy and thank you all for this wonderful honor. This experience really has been remarkable and my students have been amazing teachers. Their entire project was based on the idea that wetlands should be treated as we would want to be treated, a pure motive from which to start. Along the way we not only learned about protecting and preserving the wetlands, but also that working together we can accomplish anything we set out to do. I invite a few of my students to share with you some of the wonderful things they learned this past year.
The band plays the lilting Colors of the Wind as students, Lito Lujan and Kacy Vorst stepped up to the microphones.
Lujan: Our project was to show how good wetlands are to us. We put out door hangers. We made a presentation to the city council and stenciled storm drain warnings. We told people that wetlands are important because it prevents floods and a lot of animals live there. Thats why our project was a success.
Vorst: Our project was successful. Since we painted no dumping on the sidewalks by the storm drains, people now know that things they put down the drain goes to the wetlands. I have seen people trying to help wetlands by looking at the posters and signs on the sidewalk. People also visited the website that we made. The website told everybody about helping the wetlands. I hope that all the things we do will help people remember how important the environment really is.
