TV Recap: Tensions Rise with Bullseye on the Loose in Second Episode of "Daredevil: Born Again" Season 2
Things got off to an intense start in the season two premiere of Daredevil: Born Again. After Daredevil struck against one of Fisk's illegal shipments, the Mayor and his team scrambled to control the situation. The result was an attack on Matt's friend and retired detective Cherry. An attack they only survived because of some aid from an unexpected source.
This second episode kicks off with Cherry being brought out of his home on a stretcher after suffering a heart attack. Daredevil watches on from a rooftop as he is loaded into an ambulance. He also feels the message on the knife, which he clearly knows is from his old rival: Bullseye.
In Matt's usual church, a priest approaches a man standing at an altar. The man asks for Sister Maggie, whom he is informed, is not there. The man eventually turns around to reveal that he is Poindexter, better known as Bullseye. He asks the priest to take his confession.
Fisk trains with a boxing coach before he is interrupted by Buck, who informs him of everything that happened in Cherry's apartment. He also tells him that Daredevil had help from Bullseye, which is very threatening news to Fisk, as Bullseye once tried to kill him before. Fisk's coach tries to goat him into returning to training, which sends him in to a rage. Fisk hits his coach so hard he seemingly kills him.
After the title sequence, we see Matt and Karen discussing Cherry and everything that just happened. Their focus is on Bullseye and they try to figure out what he is after. They put that on hold though and decide to go together to meet with the owner of the restaurant. A moment later though, we see the AVTF take her away.
In Fisk's office, Buck tries to convince the Mayor to let the public know that Matt Murdock is Daredevil. Fisk refuses though, saying it would not be beneficial to him to have the public know that Daredevil is a blind man who saved his life. In the comics, Fisk has learned Daredevil's identity in the past, only to have that information taken from his mind, which only furthered his hatred for the hero.
Fisk instead releases a message calling for Matt Murdock to be honored as a hero. He tells the public that Matt could be hurt after the attack on his apartment from season one. He, of course, does not mention that it was the AVTF that attacked him. He essentially gets the whole city of New York looking for Matt Murdock without knowing why he wants him found.
Another BB Report sees a citizen blaming Daredevil for the Northern Star, before we see Daniel and Sheila watching the Fisk impersonator's video. She tries to convince him to show it to the Mayor before he finds it himself and questions if they got the footage from the Northern Star from his laptop. Daniel assures her they didn't get the footage from him, but when she leaves, he scrambles to delete it from his laptop.
Powell meets with Fisk about stepping up security with Bullseye on the loose. Fisk asks about Cherry and, without saying anything, orders Powell to go after him. After the meeting, Powell runs into Cole North, who says he wants to be back on the AVTF. North was injured in the attack on Matt's apartment. He was also a character in the comics, a detective who's goal was to bring Daredevil to justice. Powell welcomes him back to the AVTF.
In the hospital, a couple of AVTF agents go after Cherry, but instead find a room full of older cops. They refuse to leave Cherry and the AVTF eventually back down. Those two agents take an elevator back to the garage but before the door opens, they are killed by Bullseye.
More AVTF, including Powell, arrive at Cherry's room to find it empty. He reports to Fisk that Bullseye killed two more agents. Fisk asks him to step up security for Vanessa. He then meets with Daniel to question him about the video, which he has now seen on his own. Fisk threatens Daniel and orders him to find the leak in his office.
Karen and Matt watch a crew try to salvage the cargo of the Northern Star and see a crate break open, pouring diapers on the ground. They realize the project is just a show for the public and that the real salvage will come at night when no one is watching.
Fisk meets with Vanessa as they prepare for an event and discuss his future ambitions, ones that extend far beyond New York. Meanwhile, Matt and Karen continue to watch as cargo is still being pulled off the ship. Now though, that cargo is the weapons Matt found earlier. Matt tells her he needs to get into Red Hook to stop the shipment from being delivered.
Soledad Ayala and Angela Del Toro, the wife and niece of the late Hector Ayala, see a missing persons poster for Matt as they make their way into a convenience store. Soledad sees a teenager attempting to steal a drink and tells him to put it back. The two argue a bit before the store owner points a gun at the teen. Soledad tries to calm the situation down, but AVTF agents come in and knock out the owner and grab the teen. Soledad tries to stop the agent from grabbing the other kids, putting her hand on an agent in the process. He says she was assaulting an officer and drags her out of the store before throwing her in a truck and driving off. The whole scene is almost too real right now and certainly resonates.
Dr. Glenn presents her new book to an audience at the dinner hosted by Vanessa. Later, Vanessa approaches Glenn and they discuss vigilantes. It becomes clear that Vanessa is afraid of Bullseye lingering as she peers out a window. We then see that she was right to worry, because Bullseye is in fact watching her. Remember, Vanessa is the one who hired Bullseye to kill Foggy Nelson, a task that landed him in prison with life threatening injuries.
Kirsten works alone in her office when she hears a sound. As she investigates, she finds Angela, who approaches her for help. She explains the situation with Soledad before seeing the evidence box from her uncle's case. Kirsten opens it for her, revealing the White Tiger suit and amulet, which granted Hector superhuman abilities.
BB meets Daniel at his apartment for a dinner while Fisk confronts Sheila in his office. Daniel wastes little time before questioning BB about the Fisk parody video, which is coming from a handle called City Without Fear. He asks if she was the one behind it and she denies it. Meanwhile, Fisk pressures Sheila by showing her a file on Gallo, the former police commissioner who Fisk killed after Sheila turned on him. Fisk doesn't actually question Sheila about the leak in his office, but he is clearly suspicious of her.
Matt and Karen meet with Josie at her former bar before officer Angie Kim and another officer knock on the door. The two are allies of Daredevil but don't necessarily know his identity, so Matt and Karen hide. They simply check on Josie after the attack at Cherry's.
Another City Without Fear video debuts, again impersonating Fisk speaking out against the ongoing rebellion. Once it concludes, the person is revealed to be BB Urich, proving that Daniel is, in fact, the leak in the Mayor's office.
Vanessa has a dream, in which she is killed by Bullseye. She wakes in a panic and Fisk comforts her, but there is an interesting detail at her bedside. We can see a rose in the foreground. At first, we see it in her dream, shrouded in the blue light that has become a sort of trademark of Bullseye in this series. When she wakes though, we see that it is just a normal red rose. What makes this interesting is that, in the comics, Vanessa and Wilson have a son named Richard, who eventually takes on the moniker of The Rose as he follows in his father's footsteps.
Matt and Karen lie in bed and discuss their option for how to get Daredevil into Red Hook. Meanwhile, Wilson comforts his wife and she tells him she wants to return to the island she owns. It seems Vanessa is ready to abandon New York and all of their work to live a peaceful life. Wilson, however, is not so willing.
Karen gets out of bed and puts on a record. As she and Matt dance, he suddenly hears movement outside. The AVTF storms the building, grabbing Josie in the process. Daredevil saves Josie as Karen takes out an agent in the alley. daredevil fights with several more agents inside, taking them out before looking for Karen.
We see another rose, this time a neon sign that hangs in a window above some anti-Fisk graffiti. Daredevil sits below it, waiting, as Karen approaches. She brings him the Punisher's old hideout where she reveals that she captured an AVTF agent.
Tensions are clearly approaching a boiling point thanks to Bullseye being back on the board. And with Fisk calling for the public to find Matt Murdock, he has limited his enemy's ability to move about the city. However, Fisk also has to deal with this leak in his office and Daniel has to be careful of who he trusts.
