TV Recap: Murdock and Fisk Trade Blows in Latest Episode of "Daredevil: Born Again" - Season 2, Episode 3
After Fisk made a big play against Daredevil by getting the public looking for Matt Murdock, Karen made a questionable decision by capturing an AVTF agent. So while both sides continue to make moves against one another, things remain chaotic with Bullseye lingering out there somewhere. And on top of that, Jacque Duquesne's trial is looming large for both sides.
Daredevil and Karen interrogate the AVTF agent Karen took but he immediately explains that he wants to help their resistance. They question him but Matt knows he's telling the truth. He gives them a security card that would get them into Red Hook.
After the title sequence, Dr. Glenn struggles with her trauma at home. She is still visibly shaken by the events involving Muse and she opens a drawer to reveal that she still has his mask. Her mental state combined with the eerie music that accompanies this scene seem to be hinting at her almost wanting to take up the Muse mantle.
The next day, Glenn runs into Kirsten outside the courthouse. Kirsten explains that Hochberg pulled Duquesne's trial up by two weeks leaving her no time to prepare. She also attacks Glenn for her psych evaluation on Duquesne, calling her a liar. The two argue a bit and things are clearly tense between them when Kirsten walks away.
Kirsten is blindfolded and led by the AVTF to a warehouse in Red Hook, where she is allowed to meet with Duquesne as his legal counsel. They share the sentiment that he has now chance of winning his case in Fisk's corrupt system. As they meet, we see that just in the next room, dozens of people are being kept in cages, screaming for help.
Matt and Karen talk about Frank Castle and Matt assures her that he is not dead because if he were, Fisk would have celebrated his death publicly. They then again debate Frank's methods against their own as Karen mentions they could use his help. Matt stand firmly on the belief that he does not want to kill people to meet their goals. Not even Fisk.
The Governor of New York looks over a copy of the Red Hook charter, which was sent to her anonymously, by Karen. She meets with Fisk to tell him she has the power to revoke that charter, which would make Red Hook no longer a free port and therefore useless to Fisk. Meanwhile, Matt and Karen discuss their plan for him to get into the port and torch the weapons, creating a spectacle for all of New York to see, forcing the Governor's hand to revoke the charter. The Governor tells Fisk she has to consider the move because of the "dubious cargo" aboard the Northern Star. Fisk of course refutes her information but she leaves on that note.
Buck meets with Daniel to get information on the Governor and he informs him that there is no dirt on her. Daniel tries to ask Buck about his military past, flaunting his skills in gathering information. Buck tells him to put those skills to use in finding the leak in the Mayor's office.
Another City Without Fear video debuts, this time focusing on the Duquesne trial. That brings us right to that trial, which we see everyone is watching on television or their phones. Kirsten sites her earlier meeting with Duquesne, which lets Matt and Karen know that she has been inside Red Hook. After a sham of a trial, the court finds Duquesne guilty. Fisk and his team celebrate their victory in his office.
That night, the Mayor's mansion hosts a dinner with the Governor. The Governor embraces Sheila and laments her not being in Albany with her, while Daniel pumps Lt. Governor Gomez for information, coming up empty. Vanessa meets with Dr. Glenn, who compliments her earrings. Vanessa tells her she sat her next to Buck, seemingly attempting to set up a romantic relationship.
The Governor makes a toast to Fisk and we cutaway to see the salvage team from the Northern Star finishing up their job. Powell orders them to get back on the ship and they reluctantly oblige.
Meanwhile, Kirsten throws back drinks in a bar while watching a BB Report talking about Fisk's upcoming charity boxing match. A mystery man sends Kirsten a drink and when she turns to thank him, someone else bumps into her. She turns back to find a napkin with the message "your office now" written on it.
In Kirsten's office, she finds Daredevil waiting for her. He asks her about every detail she remembers about her visit with Duquesne in Red Hook. We flash between Kirsten's blindfolded walk into the port and Daredevil making the same moves as he begins his attack on the port.
Daredevil uses the security card he got from the AVTF agent Karen captured. It works, and he gets into a room where he quickly takes out two guards. He scans the noises around him and finds the watch he left in a case of guns while onboard the Northern Star. However, he also hears the screams of the prisoners. Having to make a tough decision, he rushes to free Fisk's prisoners, including Duquesne and Soledad Ayala. He gives Duquesne a pipe, which he wields has a sword as the two take on AVTF agents who swarm the room. The result is a classic Daredevil fight sequence, on par with some of the great ones we've seen in the past.
Outside, Karen sees AVTF start to scramble and begins to panic. She grabs her gun when she hears a sound rush behind her. She is shocked though when she sees Angela Del Toro emerge from the shadows, wearing the White Tiger amulet. Angela gives Karen a bag of items she got off AVTF agents, including one of their radios.
Karen uses the radio to contact Daredevil inside and he informs her of the prisoners. Karen and Angela get in position to help them escape and Duquesne drives all the prisoners to safety. Powell and other agents try to pursue but find their tires have been slashed, by what looks like a tiger claw.
Daredevil and Karen drive off as well as Powell informs Fisk of the situation. He also tells him the night crew is still onboard the Northern Start and Fisk gives him an order. We then see the Northern Star explode with the men still onboard. Fisk removed the loose ends who knew about his weapons shipment. Daredevil and Karen see this happen, understanding yet another disturbing act from Fisk.
This series has turned into a boxing match as Daredevil and Fisk continue to trade blows back and forth. Duquesne's trial went exactly as Fisk planned but his prisoner's being freed was not exactly part of his grand scheme. This episode also gave us the best action sequence this season has seen yet as Daredevil and Duquesne's fight against the AVTF was nothing short of spectacular. Now though, Matt and Karen are going to have to deal with the fall out of the Northern Star explosion.
The second season of Daredevil: Born Again is now streaming on Disney+.
