Film (and Irony) Fans Can Now Enjoy "Shrek" Films on Disney+ Through Hulu
The film that made a cultural impact parodying the Mouse House is now at the backdoor.
Fans of irony, and fans of the Shrek franchise too, can now enjoy the hugely successful animated films on Disney+, if they have the Disney Bundle featuring Hulu.
What's Happening:
- In a strange twist of fate, Disney bundle subscribers can now stream the Shrek films through Hulu on Disney+.
- In the movie, we find Shrek - an ogre - who just wants to be left alone and ends up becoming an unlikely hero. He is living peacefully in his swamp until a group of exiled fairy tale creatures end up there having been pushed out by the tyrannical Lord Farquaad. To get his home back, Shrek agrees to rescue Princess Fiona from a dragon so that Farquaad can marry her and become king.
- Along the way, Shrek meets Donkey, a wisecracking sidekick who helps him on his journey (sometimes). After Shrek rescues Fiona, they grow close - though Fiona is hiding a secret. I won't spoil it here, though you've had over two decades to watch the film.
- The original film, released back in 2001 by Dreamworks Animation, was a parody of classic Disney-style fairy tale movies, poking fun at the very films that Disney built their entire studio and brand on, so some animation fans and enthusiasts will likely find it quite ironic that it can now be viewed on Disney+.
- Part of that is because Shrek comes from DreamWorks, which was co-founded by a former top Disney executive, Jeffrey Katzenberg, who had a falling out with then Disney CEO Michael Eisner, who is widely believed to be the inspiration of Lord Farquaad.
- Additionally, the first ever Best Animated Feature award at the 2001 Oscars ceremony went to Shrek. Ironic, considering it was adopted as a category because animation was finally being taken seriously after the cirtical and artistic success of several of the Disney Renaissance films of the 90s, namely Beauty and the Beast, which was nominated for Best Picture in the early 90s. Now, after Disney was the biggest player in the medium for decades, the first ever Best Animated Feature award went to.....someone else.
- It could also be argued that Disney wasn't even nominated that year, given the other two nominees were Nickelodeon's Jimmy Neutron: Boy Genius, and Pixar's Monsters, Inc. - which was before Disney acquired the famed animation studio, though they did distribute the film.
- Shrek went on to spawn a number of sequels, shorts, and spin-offs, including the popular Puss In Boots character, who first appeared in the hugely successful, Shrek 2, which also features a cover of Bonnie Tyler's "Holding Out For A Hero" which may fans think may be better than the original.
- Shrek, Shrek 2, Shrek the Third, and Shrek Forever After are all streaming now on Hulu and Hulu on Disney+.
