Commences Sunday, January 12, 2003

The first ever Disney theme park and resort in China, Hong Kong Disneyland, will celebrate its groundbreaking ceremony on Sunday, January 12, 2003. The festivities will honour the collaboration between The Walt Disney Company and the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Government as the two entities begin the official construction phase of the theme park resort project. Hong Kong Disneyland, which will include a Disneyland-style theme park, two hotels, retail, dining and entertainment experiences, is slated to open in 2005/2006 on a 126-hectare (310-acres) site at Penny's Bay on Lantau Island. The groundbreaking ceremony will combine a traditional Chinese Lion Dance along with classic Disney characters and entertainment.
