January 2018 Disney Highlights

January 1

Today is the day for the College Football Semi-Finals on ESPN. First is the Rose Bowl Game Presented by Northwestern Mutual, featuring No. 2 Oklahoma vs. No. 3 Georgia (5 p.m. ET), then it is the Allstate Sugar Bowl, a rematch of the last two CFP National Championship Presented by AT&T with No. 1 Clemson facing No. 4 Alabama (8:45 p.m.)

January 2

As we get ready for the upcoming film, Disney Publishing releases Black Panther: The Young Prince. Life is comfortable for 12-year-old T’Challa in his home of Wakanda, an isolated, technologically advanced African nation. When he’s not learning how to rule a kingdom from his father-the reigning Black Panther-or testing out the latest tech, he’s off breaking rules with his best friend, M’Baku. But as conflict brews near Wakanda, T’Challa’s father makes a startling announcement: he’s sending T’Challa and M’Baku to school in America.

January 3

grown-ish debuts on Freeform. Yara Shahidi portrays Zoey – Dre (Anthony Anderson) and Rainbow’s (Tracee Ellis Ross) popular, entitled, stylish and socially active 17-year-old daughter — as she heads off to college and quickly discovers that not everything goes her way once she leaves the nest.

January 4

ABC presents a documentary on the 25th anniversary of the deadly Waco, TX raid on the Branch Davidian compound that led to a gunfight killing four ATF agents and six of David Koresh’s followers. After a 51-day standoff with FBI agents, the compound burned to the ground, leaving 74 more people dead. The crisis that ignited national outrage and a media firestorm have been described as the worst debacle in federal law enforcement history. The government’s misleading disclosure of key facts in the case following the event has given rise to conspiracy theories from far-right movements that cite this event as a rallying cry for their distrust of the government. The “Truth and Lies” documentary includes new details and interviews with FBI and ATF agents about the tactics they used during the standoff.  ABC also interviews survivors of the fire and children of Koresh’s followers who talk about how those events changed their lives.

January 5

Child Support debuts on ABC. The show will feature adult contestants and priceless interactions between funnyman Ricky Gervais and a group of 5 kids who say the most unpredictable things. Hosted by Fred Savage, contestants are asked to answer 10 questions correctly to earn the top prize. If they answer incorrectly, the contestants have a chance to be saved by the 5 kids who have been asked the same question by Gervais.

January 6

ESPN will air an NFL Wild Card game as the Tenessee Titans visit the Kansas City Chiefs. The game will be called my Sean McDonough and Jon Gruden, even though Gruden may depart the network to coach the Oakland Raiders. Kickoff is set for 4:35 ET.

January 7

Today is the 25th Anniversary Walt Disney World Marathon. runDisney’s marquee event returns as runners go through Walt Disney World.

January 8

We don’t know who’s in yet, But we do know that ESPN will broadcast the College Football Championship from Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta, Georgia.

January 9

This week is Sea to Shore Week on Wheel of Fortune. See Pat and Vanna celebrate Disney Cruise Line as well as Aulani and Adventures by Disney while contestants try and fill in the blanks.

January 10

Alone Together debuts on Freeform. Esther and Benji are platonic best friends who want nothing more than to be accepted by the vain and status-obsessed culture of Los Angeles. Despite their sometimes contentious relationship, when push comes to shove, they’ve got each other’s back … And they have nobody else to hang out with.

January 11

UCLA will defeat Utah on ESPN2 at 8pm PT.

January 12

Epcot’s International Festival of the Arts returns for a sophmore year. See a wide variety of visual and performing arts throughout the park.

January 13

January 14

Four new episodes of Marvel’s Avengers: Secret Wars debuts on Disney XD. After the Avengers are transported to a strange new world, Captain America and Black Widow find Iron Man and battle the mysterious Moon Knight.

January 15

Finding Nemo is part of Freeform’s Movie Night with Karlie Kloss. Supermodel Karlie Kloss sits down with friends Ruby Rose and Kaia Gerber to watch the Pixar classic. While enjoying this animated favorite, Karlie and her friends play games, make Karlie’s Kookies, and discuss why it’s so cool to be different.

January 16

Black Panther: The Battle for Wakanda is released by Disney Publishing. There is a crisis in Wakanda. The sacred Mound is being attacked by an evil cult and Wakandans are growing angry with their new king, T’Challa, aka the Super Hero Black Panther. So it’s bad timing when Black Panther receives a call from the Avengers. There is strong evidence that the king has stolen a highly classified weapon. But how? Black Panther has been in Wakanda the entire time. With help from some familiar faces in S.H.I.E.L.D and some new ones like the Dora Milaje, Black Panther will battle the greatest threats Wakanda has ever faced.

January 17

Champions #16 brings us the start of Champion for a Day. Following their staggering loss in their adventure with the Avengers, the Champions decide to double down on their mission to make the world a better place – but they know now they can’t do it alone. It’s time for a membership drive.

January 18

The new series of “Disneyland After Dark” after-hours events begins with Throwback Nite. Enjoy classic attractions, character greetings, music & dancing, and specialty food & drinks. The event will be capped off with a special performance of Fantasy in the Sky, the fireworks spectacular that debuted in 1958.

January 19

Disney After Hours returns to the Magic Kingdom where guests can enjoy the Magic Kingdom for three-extra hours. The event includes classic attractions, character greetings, and complimentary ice cream novelties, snacks & beverages.

January 20

Walt Disney was notorious for his simple Midwestern appetite, including his famously favorite foods: canned chili and Jell-O. However, the food he chose to serve at Disneyland was anything but ordinary. At the Walt Disney Family Museum, join food and wine personality and Eat Like Walt author Marcy Smothers as she takes you on a culinary journey through each of the theme park’s six lands and discusses the inventive ways that Walt and his team took theme park food to a new level. Additionally, Marcy will explore what it was like to dine at Walt’s kitchen table, giving you the opportunity to truly eat like Walt.

January 21

It is the rise of Doc Ock on Disney XD’s Spider-Man. When Otto Octavius is caught in an explosion that fuses his robot arms to his body, Spider-Man sees the opportunity to recruit “The Octopus” into becoming a hero.

January 22

In a new episode of Disney Channel’s Mission Force One, Miles teams up with space trader Dashiell Scamp to steal back his teleporting jump-coat.

January 23

Wonder what Disney might be getting with the 21st Century Fox acquisition? Baskets has its 3rd Season Premiere on FX. Nothing brings a family together like a family business – or at least that was the plan. Welcome to the Baskets Family Rodeo, where Christine is the President and CEO despite never having seen a rodeo before. Chip has his first full-time gig since Arby’s, but can barely transfer a phone call, let alone recruit much-needed clowns. And even though Dale is the only one in the family who has run a business, he can’t get anyone to listen to him – his family, the employees, or the horses.

January 24

Inhumans Judgement Day #1 is released by Marvel. The Royal Family has spent months tracking down Primagen, the element that birthed Terrigen and could save the Inhuman race from its slow extinction. But to get it, they confronted the Progenitors – beings older than the Earth itself. They stole fire from the gods. And the gods are angry. The fate of planet Earth once again sits in Black Bolt and Medusa’s hands. The Progenitors are here to end their experiment once and for all – and our world with it.

January 25

From today through January 28, ESPN will present X-Games Aspen online and on ESPN & ABC.  The world’s best will battle it out for a podium spot in Ski, Snowboard, Snowmobile and Snow Bike competitions.

January 26

The annual Lunar New Year Celebration at the Disneyland Resort returns to Disney California Adventure. To commemorate the Year of the Dog, guests will experience more Lunar New Year fun than ever before as the celebration expands to 24 days full of multicultural performances, fun-filled activities, beautiful décor, delicious cuisine and themed merchandise to celebrate the start of a new year. In addition, the “Hurry Home” World of Color preshow returns to Paradise Bay.

January 27

Pro Bowl Fun Run Series is held at Walt Disney World. From Kids Dashes to a Half Mile Run, there is a distance for football fans of any age. And it all takes place in the middle of the action at ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex during Pro Bowl Week 2018.

January 28

ESPN will broadcast the Pro Bowl from Camping World Stadium in Orlando. See the NFC and AFC all-stars play an inconsequential game that culminates a week of NFL activities in Orlando.

January 29

On Disney Channel’s Mission Force One, When Commander Nemex tries to steal a cloaking device, Mission Force One must rush to save it.

January 30

The original IllumiNations debuted 30 years ago today. While the show has gone through many changes over the years, the current iteration IllumiNations: Reflections of Earth continues at Epcot.

January 31

Marvel releases Star Wars: The Last Jedi DJ #1. Star Wars fans will get a peek into some new dark corners of the Galaxy Far Away…and out of one of those corners scuttles DJ, the mysterious character played by Benecio Del Toro. Who is this mystery man, and what put him in the path of our Resistance heroes? Join Ben Acker & Ben Blacker (Star Wars Join the Resistance, Star Wars: The Last Jedi – The Storms of Crait) and Kev Walker (Star Wars: Doctor Aphra, Darkhawk) as they reveal a day in DJ’s life just before his appearance in the film.
