Book Review: “What Makes a Hero”

Marvel’s What Makes a Hero written by Pamela Bobowicz with paintings by Eda Kaban is a beautiful picture book that shines on the lessons you can learn from the female heroes of the Marvel Universe. While branded “Captain Marvel,” the book features a wide variety of characters we know, or will get to know, that have valuable lessons to offer.

Here are the heroes featured:

  • Captain Marvel
  • Shuri
  • The Wasp
  • Nebula & Gamora
  • Scarlet Witch
  • Pepper Potts
  • Okoye
  • Valkyrie
  • Peggy Carter
  • Black Widow
  • Queen Ramonda
  • Mantis
  • Nakia
  • Maria & Monica Rambeau

I loved the diversity of the characters featured. From god-like figures, to aliens, to unpowered humans that are still heroes, the book finds lessons from all walks of life. The beautiful paintings highlight the diversity by featuring characters in varying situations that range from the heat of battle to a tender moment between family members.

Bobowicz does a good job of writing the complex lessons in a way a child can understand. Between the beautiful artwork and insightful words, I urge readers to not rush through the book. Let the imagers and words resonate. And while this book may be written for children, let lessons can be applied to boys and girls and women and men of all ages.

I cannot recommend this book enough. Even if you don’t have children, you may consider adding it to your collection. That way you can have a way to always be inspired.
